About The Position

Under the general supervision of an administrator, and general direction of a classroom teacher and specialists, including technical direction of a registered nurse, performs duties related to basic health care, meals, socialization, and developmentally appropriate activities for students who have acute or chronic health problems requiring daily care or monitoring. Assists certificated staff in reinforcing instructional activities to students who are medically fragile and/or non-ambulatory, individually or in small groups. This role requires knowledge and abilities to assist in integrating specialized health care services in an instructional setting, including monitoring bodily functions, recognizing and reporting changes in conditions, and performing routine health care procedures that do not require a registered nurse's professional judgment.

Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Completion of at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at an institution of higher education; OR Attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher degree; OR Passing score on a Personnel Commission examination demonstrating knowledge and ability in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
One year of experience providing health care services in a school, hospital, skilled nursing, extended care, or similar care environment.
Possession of a valid CPR and First Aid certificate at time of application and throughout employment (online-only certificates are not acceptable).
Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.
Knowledge of strategies and techniques for instructing medically fragile or mobility-impaired students.
Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices related to individuals with medical fragility or orthopedic impairments.
Knowledge of essential procedures and concepts related to health, safety, hygiene, and patient care.
Knowledge of principles of body mechanics in transferring and providing personal care to non-ambulatory students.
Knowledge of effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of secondary-level academic subjects taught in District schools.
Knowledge of emergency crisis management techniques.
Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Knowledge of record-keeping and report preparation techniques.
Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and hygiene standards.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations.

Nice To Haves

Current enrollment in an approved nursing program may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
Experience working with children and individuals with severe physical disabilities is desirable.

Responsibilities

Performs specialized health care procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse, such as suctioning, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, colostomy/ileostomy care, and oxygen administration.
Provides personal hygiene care including toileting, diapering, cleaning, hand washing, dressing, and grooming.
Maintains toileting schedules and serves lunch, feeding students with severe eating problems and monitoring self-feeding students.
Monitors students for signs of seizures, hypo/hyperglycemia, and other health changes, alerting licensed personnel as needed.
Maintains health awareness in the classroom and inspects medical equipment for minor repairs and preventative maintenance.
Maintains logs of administered procedures and operates/maintains medical and orthopedic supplies and equipment.
Administers first aid and/or CPR as necessary.
Uses universal precautions when working with students who may have chronic, contagious conditions.
Assists in using adaptive equipment and mobility procedures as instructed by a therapist.
Attends trainings, meetings, and workshops to maintain current knowledge in special education, health services, and emergency crisis management.
Assists students getting on and off buses, including those in wheelchairs.
Lifts non-ambulatory students in and out of wheelchairs, braces, and other orthopedic equipment using proper lifting techniques and safety procedures, potentially lifting students over 50 pounds with assistance.
Provides proper positioning for non-ambulatory students.
Assists staff in moving pupils to and from activities on campus.
Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
Accompanies medically fragile students on the bus as assigned.
Assists other Instructional Assistant staff in monitoring students with severe behaviors as assigned.
Assists in providing instructional support to individuals or small groups in areas including cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, feeding, self-help, and social skills.
Follows daily instructional schedules.
Assists in general housekeeping duties to maintain assigned facilities in a clean and sanitary condition, including disinfecting equipment and materials, and sanitizing laundry and dishes.
Maintains a professional rapport and demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of students, staff, and parents/guardians.
Communicates with supervising certificated staff and professional support personnel to gather data on student progress and implement IEP objectives.
Maintains confidentiality of student records.
