About The Position

Deer Park Elementary is seeking an Instructional Assistant II - Special Education Aide to support teachers in designated instructional, non-instructional, management, and clerical tasks. The specific activities will be tailored to the needs of the students. Aides may conduct community-based instruction and classroom activities independently with appropriate direction and supervision from the teacher. This role requires patience, kindness, professionalism, and empathy to help each child develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically at their own pace.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Associates Degree, OR Minimum of 48 college credit hours, OR Pass a state approved test
  • Must be capable of working with students who may have physical, intellectual, emotional and/or behavioral exceptionalities.
  • Basic computer skills including use of mouse and keyboard to navigate computer, e-mail, and websites.
  • Knowledge of classroom management techniques.
  • Knowledge of documentation and record-keeping techniques.
  • Communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of policies and objectives of assigned program and activities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains confidentiality of records and information concerning students and classroom activities, referring questions to the teacher or principal.
  • Is punctual, prepared, and utilizes time appropriately to maintain continuity of instruction.
  • Attends and completes appropriate professional development meetings.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude toward the school, students, staff, and community.
  • Conducts classroom or community-based instruction under the direction and supervision of the teacher.
  • Assists with the administration of classroom assessments, which will be scored by the teacher.
  • Assists in adaptive physical education and other motor activities under teacher direction.
  • Assists children with self-care activities, including feeding and toileting (diapering when necessary).
  • Tutors students individually and in small groups without direct supervision.
  • Assists in reviewing home and seat work activities.
  • Assists children with oral and written communication, make-up work, and hands-on activities.
  • Observes and records student behavior, assists in behavior management systems, and reinforces positive behavior.
  • Participates in reading and story-telling activities.
  • Assists the teacher in helping each child develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically.
  • Collects and prepares materials, and manages displays and instructional activities.
  • Records written materials for children with visual or physical disabilities.
  • Helps children solve personal conflicts with other children.
  • Implements all safety measures and procedures and assists students when necessary.
  • Works with technology and modern office equipment.
  • Assists in classroom organization and management.
  • Assists students with appropriate bus behavior and on instructional field trips.
  • Assists certified persons in implementing policies and regulations governing student conduct.
  • Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies of the Daviess County Board of Education, KRS and KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
  • Administers health services to students as necessary, including medication administration, operation of medical equipment, or clinical procedures, following provided training.
  • Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Daviess County Public Schools.
