About The Position

Under general supervision of an administrator, and general direction of a classroom teacher and specialists, this role instructs adult students during community based instruction and at vocational job sites. The assistant also helps adult students take public transportation to community instruction and work sites, and performs other related duties as required. This position is distinguished from other instructional assistant positions by the varying community locations and work sites at which work is performed, absence of immediate supervision, the independent judgment exercised, the emphasis on vocational skills, and the special needs of the adult population. Incumbents in the classification are required to take adult students out in the community and assist them in learning vocational, social, and living skills.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of graduation from high school and completion of at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at an institution of higher education; OR Attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher degree; OR Meeting a rigorous standard of quality by receiving a passing score in an examination administered by the Personnel Commission which demonstrates the knowledge and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Additional college-level course work directly related to this classification, such as Psychology, Child Development, Special Education or a related field.
  • One year of experience working with special needs students in an instructional setting.
  • Possession of a valid CPR/First Aid certificate and any other certifications pertaining to this position at time of application and throughout employment. The class must be for "Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR" and cannot be an online-only or fully virtual course.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with adult students with significant disabilities and/or developmental delays is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specific job training and work site job coaching.
  • Acts as liaison between adult students and work sites in the community.
  • Observes student work at the work sites and assists certificated staff in creating appropriate work duties according to each student's capabilities.
  • Monitors the performance of students at the work site and in the classroom.
  • Observes and records behavior patterns and reinforces acceptable behavior.
  • Reports behaviors and performance to certificated staff.
  • Assists students in taking public transportation, providing assistance as necessary for the purpose of ensuring student safety.
  • Helps pupils learn to be aware of their personal appearance and assists in training for personal hygiene, taking care of personal needs, and developing self-sufficiencies.
  • Directs students in the development of appropriate social behavior.
  • Assists students in meeting their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.
  • Works as a team with other staff.
  • Attends and participates in a variety of trainings, meetings and workshops to maintain current knowledge, which includes developments in the field of special education and emergency crisis management.
  • Provides assistance in self-help training in feeding, grooming, brushing teeth, toilet training, changing diapers and other hygiene related tasks.
  • Provides assistance to students who use bus transportation as necessary.
  • May push students in wheelchairs.
  • May assist other Instructional Assistant staff in performing specialized health care procedures and/or monitoring students who demonstrate severe behaviors as assigned.
  • Administers first aid and/or CPR as necessary.
  • Reacts effectively to emergencies.
