About The Position

This is a part-time (28 hours per week) position at Brigham Young University (BYU) within the Instruction Department. The role involves teaching Library Instruction classes, coordinating the scheduling and maintenance of department classrooms and the Experiential Studio, supervising and training student employees, planning and supporting department events, managing department purchasing and accounting, and compiling department reports. Requirements

  • One year office or secretarial experience
  • Experience teaching or presenting to adult learners
  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to manage several projects/responsibilities at one time
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, students and patrons
  • Ability to be a self-starter and problem-solver, including working with minimal supervision and evaluating current practices to increase efficiency and effectiveness
  • Experience in and understanding information literacy, library research resources (including databases)
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, LibCal
  • Experience with Workday
  • Teachable, flexible, insightful and enjoy the challenges of supporting a department of diverse responsibilities and programs.
  • Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned Library Instruction class sessions for First Year and Advanced Writing, collaborating with English professors and preparing effective instructional plans.
  • Mentor and support non-student employees and student library employees in learning to teach library instruction classes.
  • Assess teaching effectiveness and adjust teaching methods as needed.
  • Manage and mediate the schedule for five Library Instruction classrooms, including various types of classes, trainings, and campus-wide events.
  • Review and schedule use of the Experiential Studio for semester-long classes as part of the Experiential Studio Steering Committee.
  • Provide daily support for classrooms and the Experiential Studio, ensuring room setup, supplies, and technology are in working order.
  • Purchase supplies as needed for classrooms and the studio.
  • Supervise one student employee to support classrooms and studio.
  • Administer schedules and assignments for department-wide meetings, projects, and department belonging activities.
  • Reconcile department and unit supplies and budgets.
  • Compile department statistics for library-wide reporting (Annual Department Report and LIR).
  • Create and execute non-student and student unity & belonging events and trainings.
  • Work with department members on assessment projects.
  • Collect and organize department data.
  • Manage projects as needed and as assigned.
  • Support library-wide events run by the department, department and unit events, and New Student Orientation by purchasing supplies, managing catering, following a budget, and creating documents.
  • Plan Visiting Scholar events, including scheduling venues and transportation, managing catering, hosting responsibilities, arranging travel needs, and maintaining a budget.
  • Prepare Information Literacy Faculty events, including managing catering and room setup/cleanup.
  • Promote events and services.
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance skills.
  • Continually update knowledge of procedures and technology/software skills.
  • Serve on Committees Relevant to Job Assignment.
  • Attend, participate/train, and serve when assigned as chair/vice chair of the Department Assistant Committee.
