About The Position

This position is responsible for the daily operations of the Science Support Center (SSC), including personnel supervision, technical training, and managing scientific equipment and inventory. The role involves direct oversight of student employees, managing asset programs, overseeing the acquisition and resale of laboratory consumables, and ensuring the safety and security of the facility and its contents. The technician will also serve as the primary operator for key software systems and support faculty with lab curriculum needs.

Requirements

  • Experience as a primary operator for asset-tracking databases, chemical inventory databases, and point-of-sale software.
  • Experience resolving technical problems with software and systems.
  • Experience coordinating purchase requests with fiscal staff.
  • Experience assessing and processing fees and charges.
  • Experience maintaining operations manuals and documenting workflows.
  • Experience with facility security, including lock-up procedures and key management.
  • Experience overseeing chemical inventory security and SDS records.
  • Experience with chemical safety training.
  • Experience ensuring safe lab operations and conducting safety testing.
  • Experience preparing reagents, supplies, and equipment for lab curriculum.
  • Ability to provide teaching and logistics support.

Responsibilities

  • Train student employees on asset management, point-of-sale programs, SSC procedures, customer service, and basic equipment maintenance.
  • Provide mentorship and oversight to approximately eight student employees to ensure operational standards are met.
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise student employees, developing quarterly work schedules.
  • Manage daily SSC operations and make operational decisions.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for equipment or service-related issues, customer service requests, and resolving resource conflicts.
  • Assist the broader instruction and classroom support team with division-wide needs and represent the SSC in divisional meetings.
  • Direct and execute the scientific equipment asset program, including tracking, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Manage the acquisition, stocking, and resale of laboratory consumables and chemicals, including inventory tracking, billing, invoicing, and auditing.
  • Serve as the primary operator for the scientific asset-tracking database, chemical inventory database, and point-of-sale software, resolving technical issues and implementing process improvements.
  • Research technical specifications and coordinate divisional purchase requests.
  • Assess and process late fees, damage charges, and recharges for assets.
  • Maintain and update the SSC Operations Manual with step-by-step SOPs for operational, logistical, and financial workflows.
  • Direct student employees in daily lock-up tasks and facilitate user access to restricted instrumentation and laboratory spaces.
  • Manage the SSC key checkout program and policies.
  • Oversee physical access and security of the SSC chemical inventory, SDS records, and chemical safety training for student employees.
  • Ensure safe lab operations within the SSC, monitor safety testing (eyewash stations, fume hoods), and submit safety data.
  • Prepare reagents, supplies, and equipment to support undergraduate or graduate lab curriculum.
  • Provide teaching and logistics support as needed.
