About The Position

As a proud member of the Helix Traffic Solutions network, we specialize in high-stakes traffic management, including lane closures, pavement markings, sign installation, and equipment rentals. Our mission is to protect both workers and the traveling public by delivering precision planning and on-site execution for infrastructure projects of all sizes. An Installation Laborer (often referred to as a Sign Crew Laborer or Traffic Control Laborer) provides the physical effort required to execute project plans on-site. This is an entry-level role that focuses on manual tasks, equipment setup, and site safety.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • A valid and clean driver's license is usually mandatory for traveling to job sites.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for long periods, including lifting, carrying, and pushing materials like signs, sand, or gravel weighing up to 50–90 lbs.
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme heat.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools such as drills, saws, pneumatic post drivers, and jackhammers for installing sign hardware and cutting concrete or asphalt.
  • Dexterity to load/unload materials safely and keep worksites organized to prevent hazards.
  • Constant alertness to moving traffic and mechanical equipment to ensure personal safety and the safety of the public.
  • Basic ability to read and follow project maps, blueprints, or technical instructions for correct sign placement.
  • Clear verbal communication is vital for coordinating with crew members and responding to inquiries from the public.
  • Being on time for early starts is a critical requirement.
  • The ability to take direction from a Foreman and work collaboratively in high-pressure environments.

Nice To Haves

  • A high school diploma is preferred but often not strictly required for entry-level labor positions.

Responsibilities

  • Loads, unloads, and moves building materials (such as signs, cones, and barricades) and tools to the appropriate locations on-site.
  • Assist in the physical installation of products, which may include digging postholes by hand, operating jackhammer to install bases, using hand tools to build signs, assembling/setting up traffic control devices.
  • Distributes signs and markers in designated patterns and may act as a flagger to stop or direct traffic flow safely around the work crew.
