About The Position

Working under the direction and supervision of the Coordinator, Inspection Services, the Inspector Specialist is responsible for providing inspection services for programs to private homeowners, apartment owners, co-operatives, non-profit agencies and provincially owned buildings.

Requirements

  • Completion of a related technical trade (Electrical, Plumbing, General Construction, etc) or training in the area of specialty, plus three (3) years of related experience.
  • Supervisory experience in the inspection of residential and light commercial construction.
  • Knowledge of National/Provincial/Municipal building codes and standards.
  • Comfortable working with computers and experience with software programs, including Microsoft Office.
  • Current knowledge of building codes, mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of construction and renovation of housing.
  • Ability to administer/oversee capital projects in the field.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Highly organized.
  • Ability to develop a strong working knowledge of housing programs offered by the Department.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with colleagues, clients and contractors.
  • Ability to work well with all partners to support program delivery.
  • Problem solver who plans in advance to ensure colleagues and clients are informed and supported when issues or questions arise.
  • A valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Building Technology/Construction Administration Technology / Building Technician qualifications would be considered an asset.
  • Red Seal Endorsement and/or certification with the Building Inspector's Association of Nova Scotia is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Make recommendations on homeowner repairs.
  • Complete new construction inspections.
  • Prepare bid forms.
  • Write technical reports.
  • Prepare job estimates.
  • Complete progress payments.
  • Ensure compliance with National / Provincial / Municipal building codes and standards.
  • Provide sound technical advice to owners and contractors, ensuring sound building practices and workmanship.
