About The Position

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Research, Implementation, and Safety unit (RIS) is a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to making the streets of New York City safer for all users as part of Vision Zero, a citywide policy striving to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities from traffic crashes. DOT seeks a candidate to serve as an Inspector for the School Safety group in RIS. School Safety is responsible for improving safety near K-12 schools throughout New York City. The group redesigns streets next to schools with a goal of reducing youth injuries, improving safety and accessibility, and encouraging non-motorized transportation in all five boroughs. The unit manages all curb regulations and signage next to NYC K-12 schools, including the School Slow Zone program. The Inspector will be responsible for conducting field investigations and performing data collection to support School Safety programs, including the installation of School Slow Zones, school loading zones, and other specialized safety projects such as street redesigns and projects to improve child visibility. This work will help the team deliver on the ambitious goal of Mayor Mamdani’s administration to install a 15-mile-per-hour School Slow Zone next to every K-12 school in NYC by the end of 2029. Typical assignments will involve detailed curbside/intersection inventories, traffic control and land use assessment, examining street operations, traffic/pedestrian volume counts, and radar speed surveys. Additional duties to be performed consist of data entry, using City-specific transportation software (e.g., SIMS to create sign orders), assisting with data analysis, maintenance of databases, and preparation of relevant forms, reports, correspondence, and logs. Interested candidates must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions.

Requirements

A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization, and two years of full time satisfactory experience in vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies; or
An Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or another closely related field; or
A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a satisfactory combination of experience and/or college education that is equivalent to that described in "1" or "2" above. College credits obtained from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credits for one year of full time experience. However, for every 30 semester credits that are substituted for one year of full time experience, at least 6 of the 30 semester credits must be in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or other closely related field.
Must possess a motor vehicle driver license, valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Experience with SIMS, a DOT-specific program for writing sign orders, is a plus.
Willing to work outside in all weather conditions.
