About The Position

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Consumer Services, Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection is seeking an Inspection Specialist. The headquarters for this position is negotiable within Bradford, Clay, Duval, and St. Johns County. This position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to specific Florida Statutes and Administrative Codes. Employees appointed to positions involved in amusement device inspection must pass and maintain the NAARSO level 1 certification within 36 months of appointment. Moderate travel is required, including overnight stays and potentially up to two weeks at a time for emergency programs. The candidate must reside in the required county(ies) throughout employment. Honesty and authenticity are required in all stages of the evaluation and selection process, and the use of AI tools will be considered. A background screening, including fingerprinting, is required for employment.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in electrical, plumbing, or mechanical inspection, building maintenance and repair, or in the construction, installation, inspection, maintenance or repair of mechanical or amusement devices, rides, or attractions.
  • College education from an accredited institution or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours per year up to a maximum of three (3) years of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in building construction or maintenance, mechanics, plumbing, mathematics, physical science, electrical repair or maintenance and/or engineering.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.
  • Must reside in required county(ies) throughout employment in this position.
  • Successful applicants must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting, as a condition of employment.

  • Employees appointed to positions involved in amusement device inspection under authority of Section 616.242, Florida Statutes, must pass and maintain the NAARSO level 1 certification as required, as implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services within 36 months of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections on amusement rides.
  • Certifies amusement rides operable for public use.
  • Tests equipment to ensure compliance with Florida Statutes.
  • Issues stop-operation orders.
  • Conducts re-inspections.
  • Conducts inspections on aerial adventure courses and ziplines to include various heights.
  • Creates invoices and collects fees from companies.
  • Completes inspection documentation.
  • Verifies proper insurance and affidavit coverage for companies.
  • Reviews, investigates and prepares documentation for accident reports.
  • Educates new companies of Florida inspection laws, rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Submits travel documentation and expenses incurred for reimbursement.
  • Assists in training new hires as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
