About The Position

General Dynamics NASSCO, a proud member of the General Dynamics Marine Systems business unit, is seeking two Inside Machinist J1-J4 for their Inside Machine Shop in Norfolk, Virginia. NASSCO is involved in ship construction, advanced ship repair, conversion, and maintenance for both commercial and national defense assets. This role offers an opportunity to be part of important and exciting work within the company.

Requirements

Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures.
Knowledge of shop mathematics.
Knowledge of machinability of materials.
Knowledge of layout techniques.
Blueprint reading skills.
Ability to read sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
Experience in proper operation of turret lathe, boring mill, engine lathe, milling machine, drill press, grinders.
Experience with shop measuring tools.
For JP1: Basic hand tools associated with machinist trade.
For JP2: Inside machinist tools to include calipers, indicators, micrometers, and cutting tools.
For JP2, JP3, JP4: Limited supervision may be required.

Responsibilities

Sets up and operates conventional and special-purpose machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
Fits and assembles machined parts into complete units.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors like speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.
Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls as required.
Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings.
Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools.
Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
Fabricates and refurbishes machine parts using basic machine shop equipment.
Operates turret lathe, boring mill, engine lathe, milling machine, drill press, and grinders.
Uses shop measuring tools.
