About The Position

The Inserter Operator 2 is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and making adjustments to automated inserting equipment used in the production of commercial print and/or direct-mail products. This position ensures printed materials and components are accurately assembled, inserted, and processed according to customer specifications, production instructions, and established quality standards. The Inserter Operator 2 is expected to independently perform routine equipment setups and changeovers, identify and correct common equipment or material issues, perform required quality inspections, minimize waste and downtime, and meet established production and safety expectations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience operating inserting, mailing, bindery, finishing, or similar commercial print production equipment preferred.
  • Prior experience equivalent to an Inserter Operator 1 or demonstrated proficiency operating production equipment preferred.
  • Experience in a commercial printing, direct mail, fulfillment, or manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle materials and operate equipment.
  • Reaching, bending, stooping, twisting, and repetitive movement.
  • Lifting and carrying printed materials, trays, cartons, or supplies within established company lifting guidelines.
  • Pushing or pulling carts, pallets, or other production materials as required.
  • Visual ability sufficient to inspect printed materials, identify defects, and verify job components.
  • Working around moving mechanical equipment in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and monitor inserting equipment and related finishing equipment in accordance with job specifications and production requirements.
  • Review job tickets, work instructions, samples, and customer specifications before beginning production.
  • Load printed materials, envelopes, inserts, and other components into appropriate equipment stations.
  • Perform machine setups, changeovers, adjustments, and routine operating functions with limited supervision.
  • Verify that all required components are loaded in the correct sequence and orientation.
  • Monitor equipment throughout the production run to ensure proper feeding, inserting, sealing, folding, and overall product quality.
  • Perform required quality checks at established intervals and document results according to company procedures.
  • Verify piece counts, component accuracy, print quality, addresses, barcodes, sequencing, and other job-specific requirements as applicable.
  • Identify and troubleshoot common equipment problems, including jams, misfeeds, doubles, missing inserts, alignment issues, and other operating conditions.
  • Make appropriate machine adjustments to maintain quality and production efficiency.
  • Escalate mechanical, electrical, or recurring equipment problems to the Supervisor or Maintenance department when necessary.
  • Monitor production speed, waste, spoilage, and downtime and take appropriate action to improve operating performance.
  • Accurately complete production records, quality documentation, downtime records, material usage information, and other required paperwork or electronic transactions.
  • Maintain accurate accountability of customer materials and printed products throughout the production process.
  • Assist with reconciliation of materials and completed production quantities when required.
  • Follow established procedures for handling damaged, defective, or nonconforming materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the shift.
  • Perform routine operator-level cleaning and preventive maintenance as assigned.
  • Follow all machine guarding, lockout/tagout, PPE, and other established safety requirements.
  • Follow company policies regarding quality, security, confidentiality, and customer information.
  • Assist with training or providing work guidance to Inserter Operator 1 employees and other production employees as assigned.
  • Communicate job status, equipment issues, quality concerns, and production delays to the Supervisor and appropriate team members.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities designed to improve safety, quality, productivity, and waste reduction.
  • Support other production or finishing operations as business needs require.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Operate assigned inserting equipment with limited supervision.
  • Independently complete standard machine setups and changeovers.
  • Make routine equipment adjustments during production.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common operating problems.
  • Recognize quality defects and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Read and understand job tickets and production specifications.
  • Accurately complete production and quality documentation.
  • Maintain established productivity and quality standards.
  • Identify situations requiring Maintenance or Supervisor assistance.
  • Assist less-experienced operators with basic equipment operation and job procedures.
  • Demonstrate consistent compliance with safety procedures and company policies.
