About The Position

This role involves a progressive career path for an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, starting as a Trainee and advancing to State Licensed and Nationally Certified levels. The technician will be responsible for a variety of pharmacy operations, including order processing, medication preparation and distribution, inventory management, billing, record maintenance, and ensuring departmental policies and procedures are followed. The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment, and proficiency in pharmacy-specific applications. Specific duties will vary based on the technician's licensure and certification level.

Requirements

Massachusetts state registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee (Trainee).
Mathematical skills at the level of a High School graduate or equivalent, as demonstrated by successful completion of a timed CCHC Pharmacy math test (Trainee).
Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
High School graduate or GED.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently.
Possesses basic computer/keyboarding skills necessary to run multiple Pharmacy specific applications and communicate efficiently via the messaging system.
Attempt CCHC Pharmacy Tech Trainee exam after a minimum of 500 hours worked (Trainee).
Must pass CCHC Pharmacy Tech Trainee exam by 700 hours worked (Trainee).
Upon obtaining MA Pharmacy Technician State License, incumbent will transfer into the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, State Licensed - Grade S7, Job Code – 7211 position.
Massachusetts state registration as a Pharmacy Technician (State Licensed).
Duties require very good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Must obtain PTCB certification or equivalent within 1 year of hire (State Licensed).
Upon obtaining PTCB certification or equivalent certification, incumbent will transfer into the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, Nationally Certified - Grade S8, Job Code - 7210 position.
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification or equivalent certification (Nationally Certified).
One-year recent experience (within the past 3 years) as a Pharmacy Technician; 3 years preferred, or PTCB certification or equivalent certification as an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Trainee (Nationally Certified).

3 years preferred experience as a Pharmacy Technician (Nationally Certified).

Responsibilities

Reviews and processes departmental order requests.
Prepares medications for distribution to the patient care units.
Distributes medications to the patient care units.
Maintains the medication inventory, place orders in stock, check expiration dates, process returns as needed.
Performs billing and other pharmacy duties that do not require a pharmacist.
Maintains appropriate records and regulatory documentation.
Pre-packaging and labeling of bulk medications to unit dosed containers/packaging.
Answers telephone directing phone calls appropriately and diverts all medication/clinical inquiries to the Pharmacist.
Maintains cleanliness of the department.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and Infection Control standards.
Participates in educational programs, in-services and meetings as required.
Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and coworkers.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Responsible for issuance and delivery of non-controlled medications in a timely manner (Trainee).
Accurately process sales in Community Pharmacy Point of Sale device using cash, credit cards, and checks (Trainee).
Orders medications from various suppliers (Inpatient).
Prepares parenteral products (Inpatient).
Trains and orients new pharmacy support personnel (Inpatient).
Issuance and delivery of Schedule II-V medications to an Automated Dispensing Cabinet in a timely manner (Inpatient).
Obtains patient medication orders for medication reconciliation duties to input into MAR (Nationally Certified).
Prepares chemotherapy and dosage calculation checks (Nationally Certified).
