About The Position

Join the MercyOne Family! We are looking to hire an Inpatient Pharmacy Tech Trainee. As an Inpatient Pharmacy Tech Trainee at MercyOne, you will be learning to assist Clinical Pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications and maintaining the drug inventory and maintaining patient records in Pharmacy. These duties require skill and training but do not include making clinical judgments that require a pharmacist professional judgment. Pharmacy Technician Trainees work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist. Ages of patients served range from neonatal to geriatric.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification required prior to pharmacy technician trainee registration expiration date. Staff are encouraged to apply for the exam within the first 6 months of work experience.
  • Once obtained, required to be registered with the State of Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 30 days.
  • Required to be registered with the State of Iowa Board of Pharmacy prior to commencing employment.
  • Must be able to type accurately, prefer to have basic knowledge of medical terms and abbreviations.
  • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination are useful in preparing or assisting with preparation of orders.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills in a Windows environment.

Nice To Haves

  • One to three years of previous pharmacy experience is preferred (or combination college and experience).

Responsibilities

  • Batch preparation, new dose preparation, stock preparations, Pyxis functions, inter/intra department orders outside routine processes, maintenance of assigned area(s), liaison activities, medication distribution processes and departmental service requirements.
  • Procures and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Assigned Pharmacy work area is kept clean, neat, and well-organized during shift. Pharmacy equipment is kept clean and reports any potential or actual equipment failures in a timely manner.
  • Assists the Pharmacist with filling physician orders, medication kit and/or trays, medication carts, and floor stock requisitions accurately.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate aseptic techniques.
  • Replenishes medications in emergency drug containers and floor stock areas accurately.
  • Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule.
  • Promptly returns any unused or discontinued medications to Pharmacy.
  • Restocks ambulance bags following approved departmental procedure.
  • Accurately fills pharmacy prescriptions in Mercy Outpatient Pharmacy as needed.
  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain appropriate inventory levels by recording all drugs and supplies needed on the appropriate document for wholesaler ordering by Pharmacy Buyer.
  • Assists Pharmacy Buyer in receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations as needed.
  • Rotates stock within Pharmacy to ensure use before expiration date.
  • Efficiently restocks automated dispensing machines (Pyxis) including the immediate restocking of any “stock out” (includes using PARx system to refill).
  • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Restocks medications and IV dispensing areas accurately.
  • Prepackage medications from bulk to unit dose accurately using appropriate procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to use pharmacy automation as needed to complete assigned tasks (includes Pyxis medstation, CII Safe vault, Euclid/MILT, QS1 systems and CERNER pharmacy systems).
  • Enhances the quality of care of delivery of care and effective operation of the department.
  • Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds.
  • Triages telephone calls appropriately in a professional, customer service fashion as necessary.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
  • Completes all credits returned to pharmacy timely and accurately; accurately and appropriately returns medications to stock.
  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
  • Answers requests and makes STAT deliveries to patient areas when requested.
  • Able to identify needs of the department and demonstrate the ability to work towards a solution.
  • Able to resolve problems with minimal intervention or supervision.
  • Communicates with appropriate personnel problems encountered and resolution status.
  • Assists in other technicians in completion of their duties.
  • Ability to train new employees by virtue of their knowledge of pharmacy operations and has demonstrated the ability to teach others.
  • Assists in other duties as delegated by the Clinical Pharmacist.
  • Completes Pharmacy procedures for discharge patients.
  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections. Identifies and replaces or secures any unsecured, outdated, or unusable medications.
  • Accurately performs assigned duties/projects as specified by the Director or Clinical pharmacist in a timely manner.
