About The Position

The Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner (NP) will play a key role in delivering care to the adult inpatient oncology and hematology patient population at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Reporting to the Cancer Institute Administrator, the NP will collaborate closely with a team of oncology physicians and advanced practice providers to provide comprehensive care to patients from initial diagnosis through treatment, management of complications, and palliative care. This position primarily focuses on inpatient oncology and hematology care, with potential opportunities for rotating between inpatient and outpatient settings for candidates with relevant certifications (Family Nurse Practitioner and/or Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner). The NP will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of cancer care, including patient assessment, treatment planning, and care coordination.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing, with a certification as a Nurse Practitioner (Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner).
  • Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of Arizona.
  • Hematology/oncology experience required either as a NP or as a nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive assessments for adult inpatient oncology and hematology patients, including history and physical exams, diagnostic study orders and interpretation, and formulation of treatment plans in collaboration with attending physicians.
  • Prescribe appropriate treatments, medications, and therapies in accordance with established protocols and in collaboration with the attending oncologist.
  • Work closely with physicians, specialists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare team members to ensure seamless, holistic care for patients.
  • Manage complications and acute medical issues related to cancer treatment, including toxicities, infections, and palliative care needs.
  • Provide compassionate palliative care, including symptom management and end-of-life care coordination, as appropriate.
  • Educate patients and their families about cancer treatments, side effects, self-management strategies, and advance care planning.
  • Consult with specialty physicians regarding changes in patient condition, diagnostic results, and treatment recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, ensuring comprehensive documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
