About The Position

The INMED Summer Institute Counselor will support and provide supervision to students in grades 7-12 as they complete the INMED SI program. This role involves living in dorms and eating in the cafeteria with students, providing transportation, planning evening activities, tutoring/mentoring students, monitoring student activities, attending staff meetings, and being on duty twenty-four hours per day for the five-week period. The counselor will also assist during study hall, course room or lab hours, driving duties, dorm duties, and student monitoring duties, serving as a positive role model.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to tutor in two or more of the subject areas being taught (biology, chemistry, algebra, physics, communications/study skills), preferably at least one science or math.
  • Ability to mentor, support, and guide students in academic, personal, and community endeavors.
  • Must have a mature and caring attitude.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.
  • Must verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • This position does not support visa sponsorship for continued employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference given to individuals who have worked specifically with American Indian Students.
  • Preference given to individuals with a minimum of one year working with students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care and supervision to up to 60 young people in grades 7-12 on campus as part of a team of counselors.
  • Live in dorms and eat in the cafeteria with students (room and board costs are paid by the program).
  • Provide transportation for students to and from the program, field trips, and extracurricular activities using UND vehicles.
  • Plan daily evening activities in cooperation with other counselors and under the direction of the Head Counselor.
  • Tutor/mentor students in an assigned class.
  • Monitor all activities of assigned students and complete final evaluations.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Be on duty twenty-four hours per day for the five-week period, with two assigned days off at the discretion of the SI Coordinator.
  • Assist and be present during study hall hours, course room or lab hours, driving duties, dorm duties, student monitoring duties, and other assignments as directed by the Head Counselor or INMED SI Coordination staff.
  • Serve as a positive, enthusiastic role model for all students.
