Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Physics or an equivalent relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in payload systems or related satellite systems engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Relevant experience in Satellite LEO/MEO Constellation Architecture and System Design.
  • Experience with digital payload systems and digital communications.
  • Understanding of interaction and integration between payload subsystems.
  • Strong systems engineering capabilities with the ability to interpret mission-level requirements.
  • Hands-on experience in satellite systems engineering.
  • Good understanding of architectures, trades and budgets related to digital communication equipment, signal processing, modulation schemes, antenna key performance parameters, networking, SDR, routing protocols and class of service.
  • Understanding of the space environment, orbit mechanics, aerospace systems and engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to fragment complex problems and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in complex digital communication systems, user links FWD/RTN, feeder links, RF and digital technologies, and end-to-end systems across ground and space segments.
  • Experience in RF architectures, space communication systems, digital processing, RF sensors, digital beamformed payload development, SDR satellite communication systems, RF system design, integration, testing and V&V of satellite payloads.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, ideally in English and French.
  • The successful candidate must be able to obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP), which requires Canadian Citizen or valid PR holder status.

Responsibilities

  • Architecture, design, analysis, implementation and optimization of end-to-end communication digital payload systems and subsystems for high-capacity satellite constellations in different technology market areas such as space telecommunications, LEO/MEO satellite constellations, communication satellites, Earth observation and digital payload systems.
  • Leading the design of communication satellite payloads and end-to-end telecommunications for constellations.
  • Liaising and leading discussions with customers and program teams.
  • Performing requirements analysis and detailed trade studies.
  • Leading and contributing to capacity analysis to evaluate satellites.
  • Leading and contributing to design reviews across the full space program lifecycle.
  • Defining system requirements and flowing them down to subsystems such as onboard digital processors, direct radiating phased array antennas, optical inter-satellite links and feeder subsystems.
  • Supervising and generating test plans.
  • Contributing to program and proposal efforts, as well as front-end architecture and design for advanced LEO and MEO communication satellite constellations with very high data rate systems.
  • Participating in detailed spacecraft design, assembly, integration, deployment, launch management and orbit operations.
  • Contributing to the engineering of key satellite subsystems, including GNC, electrical power distribution, payload and antenna subsystems, and electrical propulsion systems.
  • Supporting mission continuity and system reliability, including hands-on work related to spacecraft software maintenance once the spacecraft is in orbit.
  • Managing or guiding suppliers and less senior engineers on RF and digital hardware activities for digital beamformed payloads.
  • Contributing to RF, digital and optical communications performance budgets, as well as integration, testing, verification and validation of complex satellite payloads.
