About The Position

The rock mechanics team at GHD is among the most active in the industry, distinguished by its innovations in the field (digital mapping, use of 3D geological models to predict real-time conditions, etc.) as well as in engineering (2D and 3D finite element modeling, integrating rock-structure interaction). Our public clients (mainly transport companies and state-owned companies) and our private clients (mainly major contractors in the region, but also Canadian and international) trust our professionals to develop innovative and optimal solutions while ensuring the safety of their workers. With about fifteen professionals in Quebec, our specialists are a global reference at GHD for underground rock excavation, with the opportunity to collaborate internationally on major projects across North America, South America, Australia, and elsewhere. Currently involved in a growing number of large-scale and/or complex projects, especially in the Montreal region, we aim to become a leader in the Canadian industry and want to have a significant impact on the transformation of our communities, both through our participation in major public transport projects and through the renovation and construction of new hydroelectric facilities. We are currently looking for a rock mechanics engineer with a balanced background in the design and execution of underground and/or open-pit excavations to join our Montreal office team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in geological or civil engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in rock mass classification and the design of underground and/or open-pit excavations in rock masses.
  • Member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec.
  • Teamwork, performance, and goal achievement oriented.
  • Mastery of geomorphology, petrography, and structural geology concepts, in sedimentary, igneous/metamorphic rocks.
  • Advanced knowledge of modeling concepts and implicit elements in soil-structure interaction analyses.
  • Advanced skills in technical report writing.
  • Proficiency in geotechnical modeling/simulation software (RSDATA, Swedge, Unwedge, RocPlane, Slide RS2, RS3, Plaxis 2D and 3D, Flac2D, Flac 3D (Udec and 3Dec is an asset) or others).
  • Excellent communication skills in French (verbal and written).
  • Hold the ASP Construction card.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a vehicle.
  • Dynamic individual ready to work in a team in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Studies and interpretations: Mapping and evaluating rock mass classification for rock foundations, open-pit rock faces, or underground excavations (tunnels) according to GSI, Q, and RMR ratings.
  • Design of engineering solutions: Contribute to the development and implementation of feasibility studies for proposed technical solutions to provide feedback and data for design validation.
  • Recommendation of technical developments: Define hypotheses and parameters for numerical modeling; Write reference geotechnical parameter reports (GBR).
  • Project management: Perform technical monitoring to ensure the quality of executed work (excavation, drilling, consolidation for rock face stabilization, bolt and/or anchor installation, grouting, shotcrete placement, in-situ testing, etc.), ensure coordination of site monitoring work (geotechnical instrumentation and others), and ensure good communication with the client. Supervise various excavation works, including the implementation of temporary or permanent support systems and rock consolidation, grouting, etc.
  • Data collection and analysis: Write technical notes and reports for studies, feasibility, and design of rock face consolidation (natural or excavated), tunnels, and/or caverns; Prepare various plans and specifications related to geotechnical design of temporary or permanent rock mechanics support; Perform numerical analysis by finite element and/or finite difference methods within the framework of geostructural designs in rock mechanics.
  • Knowledge management: Implement policies and processes, collect best practices and case studies, and participate in internal knowledge-sharing sessions to gather and share knowledge among colleagues on project/program results and innovative practices in assigned projects.
  • Client management (external): Contribute to client management on behalf of more senior sales representatives using existing client management tools.
