AECOMMontreal, QC
CA$120,000 - CA$160,000Onsite

About The Position

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Principal Construction Engineer to join its growing Tunneling team in Canada. This role is ideal for a professional and collaborative individual with strong technical knowledge and extensive experience in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and SEM (Sequential Excavation Method) drilling, deep shafts, underground structures, and geotechnical and structural analysis within large infrastructure programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Minimum of six years of relevant experience in managing the design of water conveyance tunneling projects and underground excavation.
  • Strong technical capabilities in underground structure design and numerical analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or ability to obtain within one year of employment start.
  • Over ten years of experience in the design and construction of TBM and SEM tunnels, deep shafts, underground structures, and geotechnical/structural analysis for large infrastructure programs (highly desirable).
  • Master's degree in Geotechnical or Structural Engineering.
  • Experience in tunneling and trenchless technologies.
  • Technical expertise in TBM and SEM/NATM tunneling, shaft design, ground improvement, and deep shaft support structures.
  • Strong knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, rock mechanics, and soil behavior.
  • Proficiency in analytical and numerical methods for underground works, including 2D/3D modeling.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed technical decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (French and English) and ability to clearly present technical concepts.
  • Strong teamwork, coordination, and client-facing skills.
  • Bilingualism (French and English), required for mandates outside Quebec.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily field engineering activities, manage site queries and clarifications from draft to closeout.
  • Review temporary works, set-ups, sequencing, and hold/witness points, maintaining daily logs, photographic records, and concise progress reports.
  • Verify TBM launch and reception readiness, monitor operational parameters, and oversee the quality of installations and segment works.
  • Manage SEM excavated portions and their sequencing, sprayed concrete application and testing, lattice girders, steel reinforcement, and temporary supports while validating excavation classes.
  • Inspect and control excavation support works (diaphragm/slurry walls, secant/soldier pile walls with sheeting, sheet piles, bracing and strutting systems, and ground anchors), dewatering and groundwater management, and utility protection, ensuring compliance with sequencing, preloading, interlocking, and as-built traceability.
  • Implement and monitor instrumentation and monitoring (settlement points, prisms, inclinometers, piezometers, extensometers, load cells), interpret trends against trigger/action thresholds, and execute timely mitigation and design verification measures.
  • Implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control (material approvals, inspections, NCRs, and site notifications to closeout), enforce safety and environmental controls (work permits, task safety analyses/task hazard assessments, confined space/lockout-tagout, noise, vibration, and dust management), and ensure proactive coordination with geotechnical, structural, MEP, utilities, survey, contractor, designer, and client teams to resolve constraints and protect schedule and quality.
  • Independently lead and organize work plans, design tasks, and deliverables for medium to high complexity tunneling and underground works projects.
  • Collaborate closely with internal disciplines, external partners, and clients to contribute to project success.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of AECOM's tunneling standards, tools, and best practices.

Benefits

  • Hybrid work options
  • Access to cutting-edge technology and thinking
  • Work with transformative impact
