Infrastructure DevOps Engineer III

Blue Origin•Southgate, WA

About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight. As part of a small team, you will own and evolve the software infrastructure behind avionics software development for Blue Origin rocket engines. Our teams deliver the embedded software that monitors and controls fully autonomous rocket engines, and everything they build flows through the pipelines, containers, and development machines you maintain. This is a hands-on position: you will be the person other engineers come to when a build breaks, a pipeline needs to run somewhere new, or a development environment needs to be reproducible. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, initiative, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Requirements

  • B.S. degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field. Other engineering or science degrees will be considered with relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in DevOps, infrastructure, or a similar software engineering role.
  • Linux administration on RHEL and/or CentOS — comfortable managing services, filesystems, users, and permissions.
  • Docker: building and maintaining images and Dockerfiles, working with registries, volumes, and Docker Compose.
  • Virtual machines and hypervisors — provisioning, configuring, and troubleshooting virtualized build and development environments.
  • Ansible for provisioning and configuration management of physical and virtual machines.
  • GitLab CI/CD and GitLab Runners — designing, organizing, and maintaining pipelines, including build/test/deploy flows, secrets handling, and release automation.
  • Artifact repository management (Artifactory or similar).
  • Automation and scripting in Python and Shell.
  • Git fundamentals — branching strategies, code review workflows, versioning.
  • Core networking: SSH, TCP/UDP, routing basics, ports, and firewalling.
  • Ability to learn fast, multitask, and drive tasks to completion.
  • Ability to present technical concepts to peers and leadership, earn trust, and maintain positive and professional working relationships.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Rust — our infrastructure tooling spans several languages, and Rust is the one we are investing in most.
  • Working knowledge of C and C++.
  • Familiarity with Kaniko. We are phasing it out, so experience with it is directly useful during the transition.
  • Experience managing a fleet of developer machines, virtual machines, and containers as code at scale.
  • Monitoring and observability tooling for infrastructure and pipeline health.
  • Experience administering static analysis tooling for embedded or safety-critical code and integrating it into CI, including managing tool licenses and entitlements.
  • Exposure to tool qualification practices for safety-critical software development (DO-330 or equivalent).
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding assistants.
  • Track record of collaborating effectively with external IT, System Responsible Engineer, or platform teams.
  • Aerospace or other regulated-industry experience with safety-critical software.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines and the GitLab Runner fleet supporting engine software development, from unit test through delivery to development hardware and simulated environments.
  • Own the container build and distribution path - Dockerfiles, base images, registries, and artifact repositories - including migration of the existing Kaniko-based image builds to the go-forward toolchain.
  • Provision and manage developer workstations, virtual machines, build servers, and containers as code using Ansible, driving toward reproducible, self-documenting infrastructure.
  • Develop automation and tooling in Python and Shell to eliminate manual steps, reduce error rates, and improve build and test throughput.
  • Act as the team's first line of support for Docker and CI issues across our software teams - triage failures, perform root cause analysis, and review other engineers' pipeline and container changes.
  • Partner with external IT, Site Reliability Engineering, and infrastructure organizations to secure resources, resolve cross-boundary issues, and represent the team's needs.
  • Identify weak points in our infrastructure management and propose and implement improvements rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Maintain the tooling that supports our safety-critical software development process, including static analysis infrastructure and the licensing, entitlement, and availability of those tools.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Stock Options for all regular employees (working at least 20 hours/week)
  • Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
