About The Position

Specter is seeking an Infrastructure & Automation Engineer to construct the internal infrastructure essential for rapid development, testing, and deployment across their sensor fleet. As hardware variants increase and the fleet expands, validating new hardware and deploying software to the field have become significant bottlenecks. This role is designed to address these challenges through automation. This position focuses on the proactive aspects of fleet operations, including test infrastructure, deployment orchestration, and tooling to prevent issues before they arise. Initially, the focus will be on establishing reproducible test infrastructure and CI for hardware variants, automating the validation of new builds and hardware revisions.

Requirements

  • Strong scripting/programming skills for operational tooling (Python, Go, or Bash) with a proactive approach to automation.
  • Hands-on CI/CD experience, including building and maintaining pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins).
  • Solid Linux fundamentals, with comfort working over SSH in real-world environments.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Containerization experience (Docker; Kubernetes is a plus).
  • Networking fundamentals including DNS, firewalls, VPNs, subnets, and secure remote access.
  • A bias toward shipping working tools quickly and iterating, rather than spending extended periods designing perfect systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience across the hardware-software boundary, including HIL test benches, firmware, embedded software, and understanding of below-OS operations.
  • Cloud experience (AWS infrastructure, IAM, networking, observability tooling) for deployment and tracking aspects.

Responsibilities

  • Build reproducible test infrastructure for hardware variants, including test rigs, fixtures, and hardware-in-the-loop setups that yield trustworthy, repeatable results.
  • Establish and manage CI for firmware and software builds, ensuring every build and hardware revision is automatically validated before deployment.
  • Collaborate with engineering and Test Ops to convert manual test plans into automated suites and accelerate the bring-up of new hardware variants.
  • Serve as the team's primary resource for test setup, deploying benches and rigs as needed to support engineering's prototype and bring-up requirements for new hardware.
  • Maintain the health and availability of the internal development and test fleet, which serves as the foundation for the rest of the team's development and validation efforts.
  • Own the fleet-wide deployment methodology, making Over-the-Air (OTA) software rollouts automated, observable, and capable of rollback to ensure that unsuccessful pushes are non-events rather than incidents.
  • Develop tooling and pre-deployment checks to identify and mitigate problems before they impact devices.
  • Enhance tracking and visibility for deployments and fleet status, including version information, success rates, and areas requiring attention.
  • Relentlessly automate repetitive tasks (toil) such as deployment tickets, debug handoffs, and fleet checks, converting them into code.
  • Develop and maintain internal tooling that enhances the productivity of the engineering team, ensuring it is versioned, tested, and documented.
  • Instrument built systems to enable data-driven decisions regarding test and deployment reliability.
