About The Position

The Information Technology (IT) Solutions Architect II at the City of Tucson’s Information Technology Department is responsible for leading enterprise architecture initiatives and establishing IT standards. This role ensures that technology solutions align with business objectives while minimizing technical debt and operational risk. The position translates complex business requirements into scalable technical solutions by developing roadmaps, principles, and standards that support the City’s current and future technology vision. The IT Solutions Architect II may lead large-scale architecture efforts, mentor other IT architects, and provide strategic guidance to stakeholders in making informed technology decisions. Work is performed under the supervision of the IT Administrator. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment.
  • The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire or prior to the completion of the probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver's License
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Business, Engineering, Operations, or relevant applied analytical / sciences field.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in Information Technology Architecture and two (2) additional years working in IT.
  • Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Architect certification is strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Shapes and steers Information Technology (IT) architecture direction by aligning enterprise architecture priorities to business strategy, value and measurable outcomes, ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency.
  • Converts stakeholder needs and strategic objectives into actionable architecture and technology guidance, evaluates trade-offs, conflicts, and risks, and advises leadership on how proposed solutions support the desired future operating model.
  • Evaluates initiative investments to identify overlapping, conflicting, or redundant efforts and opportunities for technology consolidation.
  • Delivers clear, confident communication of complex architectural concepts, analysis, and design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ensures that solutions comply with industry standards, regulations, and security best practices. Enforces and manages standards and governance for IT solutions in the City’s technical environment.
  • Leads architecture design and solution delivery for large-scale or enterprise-wide initiatives. Mentors and provides technical guidance to other IT architects and may lead or direct work for junior IT architects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Stays current on emerging trends and technologies within the architecture domain.
