About The Position

The Information Specialist Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing tasks related to project completion including analysis, training, testing, documentation, problem resolution and implementation for laboratory information systems as a subject matter expert in an assigned laboratory area. This role involves providing input for project plans, assisting with the development and maintenance of laboratory information systems, performing file maintenance, verifying data, and providing support for LIS and IT. Key duties also include testing software changes, verifying reports, developing ad hoc reports and dashboards, monitoring and troubleshooting instrument interfaces, and performing frontline troubleshooting of peripheral devices and applications. The specialist will aid in diagnosing and preventing errors, developing LIS policies and procedures, supporting change control, and participating in computer orientation and training programs. This position also involves operational development to ensure seamless interfacing between LIS and other hospital systems, and leading technical change requests. The role is hybrid, allowing work from home for IT tasks and requiring on-site presence at various Geisinger locations for bench work and projects.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree-Medical Laboratory Technician (Required)
  • Minimum of 8 years-Laboratory (Required)
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an ASCP/NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science program OR;
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification OR;
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory
  • Certification(s) and License(s) (implied by ASCP/NAACLS accreditation/certification)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Epic Beaker and Geisinger Chemistry workflows and instrumentation preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performing tasks related to project completion including analysis, training, testing, documentation, problem resolution and implementation for laboratory information systems as a subject matter expert in assigned laboratory area.
  • Provides input and assists in developing project plans.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of all laboratory information system.
  • Performs file maintenance and updates software as requested.
  • Verifies that all data has been entered correctly.
  • Provides Laboratory Information System, Laboratory Information Technology, and assigned laboratory area with support as appropriate.
  • Assists in the testing and verification of software provided in periodic software releases for assigned lab area.
  • Assists in the testing of any software changes prior to those changes being installed in the production area for assigned laboratory area.
  • Aids in the verification of reports as to completeness and accuracy before releasing into the production area for assigned laboratory area.
  • Assists in the development of ad hoc reports and dashboards as required; meets the requestors needs in a timely manner.
  • Assisting in the monitoring, maintaining and troubleshooting of instrument interfaces for assigned laboratory area.
  • Performs frontline troubleshooting of peripheral devices and all applications for assigned laboratory area.
  • Aids in the diagnosis and prevention of errors and notifies the appropriate individuals.
  • Assists in the development of Laboratory Information System policies and procedures for intra-departmental functions.
  • Supports the process of change control maintaining required documentation and assuring communication with lab and non-lab users of the Laboratory Information System and associated systems.
  • Participates in computer orientation, training and in-service programs for all levels of laboratory personnel.
  • Provides similar services for other users as required.
  • Participates in operational development assuring trouble-free interfacing between the Laboratory Information System and other hospital and clinical information systems.
  • Responsible for submission and leading of technical change requests for assigned laboratory area.
  • Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.
