About The Position
Live Oak Bank is a digital bank serving small business owners nationwide, focused on providing groundbreaking service and technology to help customers buy, build, and expand their businesses, as well as grow their savings. This role is for a 10-week onsite internship program during Summer 2027, from May 17 to July 23, at the headquarters in Wilmington, NC. The Information Security team is crucial for protecting sensitive financial data, monitoring threats, reviewing new systems, assessing vendor security, and identifying weaknesses early. The team operates with an AI-first approach, using agents for alert triage and log analysis, with human oversight for decision-making. An intern will be integrated into this work, contributing to the team's roadmap, presenting findings to stakeholders, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of daily bank security operations. The internship encourages asking questions and providing feedback from the start.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in cybersecurity, information systems, computer science, or a related field.
- Coursework, certifications, personal projects, or club involvement demonstrating a working interest in security concepts like networking, operating systems, or access control.
- Hands-on experience using AI assistants or agents for academic or professional work, with the ability to discern when to trust and when to verify AI output.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Careful attention to detail and comfort with responsibly handling confidential information.
- Willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment and to proactively identify potential issues.
Nice To Haves
- Familiarity with security tools for scanning, log analysis, or endpoint monitoring.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Experience building or customizing AI applications (e.g., agent workflows, chatbots, coding assistants, scripts using model APIs).
- Interest in the security aspects of AI, including prompt injection, data leakage, and evaluating AI tools for company adoption.
- Some scripting experience in Python, PowerShell, or a similar language.
- Participation in capture-the-flag competitions, hackathons, home labs, or campus security organizations.
- Prior internship, part-time role, or volunteer work in technology, financial services, or a regulated industry.
Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day monitoring of security alerts and help document findings.
- Assist with vulnerability scanning and track remediation progress.
- Help review access permissions across bank systems to ensure employees have only necessary access.
- Contribute to security awareness materials to help employees identify phishing and social engineering attempts.
- Utilize AI agents and assistants for research and writing, and provide feedback on their effectiveness.
- Undertake a summer project scoped with a manager and present findings to the Information Security team.
- Observe incident response exercises, risk reviews, and vendor security assessments to understand decision-making processes.
- Provide observations on the team's work processes, even from the first week.
