The Infection Control Technician plays an important role in supporting Infection Prevention surveillance and laboratory activities, helping ensure accurate, timely data that informs patient safety, infection prevention, and healthcare epidemiology initiatives. This role supports Infection Prevention epidemiologic surveillance, research, and laboratory-based testing activities. The technician will coordinate C. difficile strain-typing workflows, including specimen receipt, tracking, preparation, plating, and shipment coordination. They will also assist with quarterly Legionella surveillance activities, including sample collection, labeling, documentation, and testing support. The role involves performing molecular testing procedures, including specimen preparation, DNA extraction, PCR, and thermocycler operation. Maintaining organism inventories, laboratory databases, and testing records is crucial for accurate and organized documentation. The technician will prepare routine surveillance and laboratory reports for Infection Prevention review and analysis, and perform quality-control activities and support compliance with laboratory, biosafety, and institutional requirements. Monitoring laboratory equipment, maintaining equipment records, and assisting with inventory and supply management are also key responsibilities. The role requires collaboration with infection preventionists and other hospital departments while appropriately communicating and escalating unexpected findings.
