About The Position

The Infection Control Nurse I supports the implementation and monitoring of infection prevention and control practices within a correctional healthcare facility. Under the direction of senior clinical staff, this role assists with surveillance activities, data collection, staff education, and compliance with infection control standards. The Nurse contributes to outbreak response efforts, helps monitor adherence to hygiene and safety protocols, and promotes a safe and sanitary environment for patients and staff.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current licensure as a Licensed Practical (LPN) in the state of employment.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience
  • Familiarity with CDC, OSHA, and state/local health department infection control guidelines
  • Basic understanding of infection prevention practices, standard precautions, and PPE usage
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established protocols
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to support staff training and cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to collect, organize, and report surveillance data accurately
  • Willingness to learn and grow in infection prevention within the correctional healthcare setting
  • Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • On-call duty may be required (available to work on short notice)

  • Upholds HIPAA and PREA regulations
  • Punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shifts
  • Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility
  • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employees must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain current knowledge of CFG’s infection control and employee post-exposure information developed by established guidelines
  • On an annual basis, do a risk assessment of the facility (Population served, Main Diagnosis, high-risk procedures, State Regulatory Requirements) to develop the surveillance program.
  • Assess staff infection control needs to develop a staff-related infection control program. (Vaccinations, Exposures, Training, Regulatory)
  • Performs surveillance on inmates and staff on an ongoing basis and formulates rates, reports, and trends data.
  • Reports communicable diseases to the health department as required by State law.
  • Monitors staff compliance with established procedures as indicated by surveillance data. (e.g., Handwashing, IV care, Catheter care, Trach care, etc.)
  • Provide inmate education as needed regarding infectious diseases and provide pre- and post HIV counseling to inmates and staff as indicated.
  • Assist with product selection in relation to Infection Control issues
  • Participate in staff, Safety, and QI committee meetings per facility policy and provide reports as requested
  • Serve as a member of the Regional Infection Control Committee
  • Functions as a member of the nursing health care team and performs assigned clinical duties as directed and within licensure
  • Provide staff training per Regulatory Guidelines and as needed or indicated by surveillance data.
  • Participate in environmental rounds
