About The Position

The assistant teacher is responsible for promoting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of the children in his/her classroom. Duties include providing supervision, guidance, and support to the children, working with the classroom teacher on lesson planning and activity implementation consistent with the center’s core curriculum, interfacing with parents, participating in parent-teacher conferences, maintaining an orderly classroom, and attending continuing education workshops and conferences as required by licensing regulations or funding sources. The assistant teacher position is supervised by the director and/or the assistant director.

Requirements

  • Hold a High School diploma or GED and experience working with unrelated children from infancy through age 2 years
  • Willingness to enroll in a CDA program leading to receiving a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or higher education, if not already achieved
  • Be at least 18 years of age

Responsibilities

  • Provide care, implement age-appropriate instruction/activities, supervision and assist in the management of a class of infants and toddlers (6 weeks-3 years old) in accordance with the center’s core curriculum under the direction of the director/head teacher
  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children through a consistent schedule of supervised and comprehensive child development program
  • Respond to children’s different and personal needs (Verbal and non-Verbal cues), temperament style, abilities and culture. Ensure that childcare routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt, hygienic and consistent with good child development principles. This includes routines related to diapering, hand washing, eating, napping and transitioning between activities
  • Provide daily care individually to each infant, including but not limited to diapering every 2 hours and feeding on demand
  • Assist with the completion of accurate, informative daily reports for each student
  • Maintain a sanitary, attractive, orderly learning environment within assigned classroom
  • Interface with parents in a professional and cordial manner
  • Participate with the teaching team, in parent-teacher conferences as scheduled or as requested by parents
  • Participate in unscheduled and scheduled supervisory conferences
  • Participate in continuing education as required by State regulations or funding sources
  • Ensure development and maintenance of positive emotional climate including classroom management strategies that support social/emotional development.
  • Keep records of children’s observations, performance and development
  • Ensure compliance with NAEYC, state, local, and agency policies, regulations and procedures
  • Provide assistance to director to cover other classrooms’ children and activities when needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Ensure the consistent accurate collection of the data
  • Identify patterns and trends of administrative services
  • Use results of data to inform supervisor of trends that may impact services
