About The Position

Industry 4.0 Engineer I is an entry-level, hands-on technical role responsible for designing, developing, and implementing secure integrations between Operational Technology (OT) — including IoT devices, Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS), RFID infrastructure, industrial controllers, edge gateways, and Material Handling Equipment (MHE) telematics — and enterprise Information Technology (IT) platforms such as SAP S/4HANA Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), Microsoft Fabric, and customer-specific ERP and MES systems. Working under the mentorship of senior engineers and the Senior Technical Fellow – Industry 4.0, the incumbent develops API and protocol-level integrations across the layers of the RAMI 4.0 (Reference Architectural Model for Industrie 4.0) reference architecture, enabling C5MI engagements with commercial manufacturing customers Department of Defense logistics clients. This role is intentionally structured as a development pathway given the scarcity of experienced Industry 4.0 engineering talent. The successful candidate is expected to grow technical breadth across SAP, KINEXON OS, Zebra, RF Controls, Dexory, and Microsoft Fabric while building cybersecurity competency aligned with NIST SP 800-82, IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-171 / CMMC 2.0, and applicable DoD STIG baselines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years of relevant professional, internship, or substantive academic / co-op experience in software engineering, systems integration, controls / automation, networking, or cybersecurity.
  • Working knowledge of at least two of the following: REST / HTTP APIs, JSON / XML data formats, TCP/IP networking, TLS / PKI fundamentals, MQTT, OPC UA, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, or PROFINET.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language (Python or JavaScript / TypeScript strongly preferred); familiarity with Git-based source control workflows.
  • Foundational understanding of cybersecurity concepts, including identity and access management, network segmentation, encryption, vulnerability management, secure software development practices, and the confidentiality / integrity / availability (CIA) triad.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and produce technical documentation, including API specifications (OpenAPI / Swagger), network diagrams, sequence diagrams, and industrial protocol references.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills sufficient to author technical documents and engage with internal teams, customer technical stakeholders, and OEM partners in a professional services environment.
  • S. person status required (US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or other U.S. person as defined under ITAR / EAR) due to anticipated work on Department of Defense engagements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Defense security clearance at the Secret level or higher; existing active clearance is strongly preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically up to seventy-five percent (75%) to customer sites, partner facilities, and C5MI engagement locations.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the RAMI 4.0 reference architecture, the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architecture (ISA-95 / IEC 62264), and the NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA).
  • Hands-on exposure to SAP S/4HANA, SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), ABAP, CDS view development, or OData service development.
  • Experience with RTLS technologies (Ultra-Wideband, BLE, Wi-Fi RTT) or RFID technologies (EPC Gen2 / RAIN, LF, HF); direct experience with KINEXON OS, Zebra Savanna / MotionWorks, RF Controls smart antennas, or Dexory robots is a significant plus.
  • Practical experience with industrial cybersecurity frameworks: NIST SP 800-82, IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-171 / CMMC 2.0, DoD STIGs, or zero-trust architectures.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Network+, GICSP (Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional), CISSP Associate, CCNA, AWS / Azure Associate, or vendor certifications from SAP, Zebra, or KINEXON.
  • Familiarity with cloud and data platforms: Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, AWS IoT Core / Greengrass, Google Cloud IoT, or equivalent.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes / K3s) and edge compute platforms (Azure IoT Edge, AWS Greengrass, NVIDIA Jetson, or comparable industrial gateways).
  • Exposure to defense logistics environments and standards, including Accountable Property Systems of Record (APSR), DoDI 5000.64, IUID, WAWF / iRAPT, or DLMS.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, tests, and documents API and protocol integrations between edge / IoT devices and enterprise IT platforms (SAP S/4HANA EWM, SAP BTP, Infor CSA, Microsoft Fabric, customer ERP / MES) using REST, OData, SOAP, MQTT, OPC UA, AMQP, gRPC, and webhook patterns.
  • Implements secure IT / OT convergence solutions aligned with the RAMI 4.0 reference architecture and the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architecture (ISA-95 / IEC 62264), including network segmentation, identity and access management, TLS 1.2+ encryption, certificate / PKI management, and zero-trust controls between Levels 0 through 5.
  • Integrates RTLS, RFID, and industrial automation hardware — including KINEXON UWB anchors and tags, Zebra fixed and mobile RFID readers, RF Controls smart antennas, Dexory autonomous inventory robots, Catalyst DC torque tools, VersaCall Andon systems, and GemOne MHE telematics — with customer SAP EWM and ERP environments.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains cybersecurity controls for IoT / OT integrations in support of commercial customers and DoD clients, including alignment with NIST SP 800-82 (Industrial Control Systems Security), IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-171, CMMC 2.0, and applicable DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
  • Supports configuration, commissioning, and acceptance testing of edge technology deployments at C5MI’s Live Warehouse Experience Center (LWEC) and at customer sites
