About The Position

Chesapeake Shipbuilding is seeking a motivated Industrial Painter to join our shipyard team. This position is responsible for surface preparation, abrasive blasting, and the application of protective marine coatings on new construction vessels. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and production goals while working in a fast-paced industrial marine environment.

Requirements

  • One to two years of industrial, marine, construction, or related painting experience.
  • Familiarity with abrasive blasting and protective coating systems.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation standards and coating application techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and coating equipment.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent judgment and attention to detail.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • All types of physical movement required for this position to successfully perform the essential functions.
  • Ability to use upper and lower extremities
  • Ability to work outside in heat, inclement weather, and cold
  • Ability to crawl, kneel, crouch, climb, and bend around and under equipment, on ladders, stairs, scaffolds, through small accesses, enter tanks, and confined spaces through hatches and manholes throughout much of the work shift
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain, including loose pack gravel
  • Normal level of visual acuity needed.
  • Must be able to understand and follow directions.
  • Normal hearing level needed.
  • Hand-eye coordination required.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently perform painting labor, to complete construction associated with building cruise ships.
  • Aggressive work ethic with a focus on production.
  • Listen, comprehend, and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Perform surface preparation activities including, but not limited to: Primers (zinc and epoxy coatings). Intermediate coats (epoxy and urethane coatings). Finish coats (urethanes and antifouling coatings).
  • Operate, inspect, clean. and maintain painting and blasting equipment, including: Blast pots. Blast hoses and nozzles. Air compressors. Airless and conventional spray pumps. Spray hoses, guns, and tips.
  • Verify proper coating thickness and coverage in accordance with specifications.
  • Perform touch-up and repair painting as required.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow directions from supervisors and foremen.
  • Practice proper safety procedures at all times.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support operational requirements.
