About The Position

This role is responsible for observing mechanical devices in operation, diagnosing and troubleshooting issues, and performing repairs and maintenance. The mechanic will dismantle devices, examine parts for defects, install and replace parts, and lubricate and clean equipment. They will also operate metalworking tools to create or repair parts, and handle the movement of heavy equipment. The position involves working with electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including installing wiring, replacing components, and diagnosing issues with machinery, transformers, motors, and lighting fixtures. The role requires utilizing computer systems for work order management and performing plant startup tasks.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Experience in general machine and fitting shop practice.
  • Experience in welding.
  • Experience in maintenance troubleshooting.
  • Experience in electrical systems.
  • Experience in hydraulic systems.
  • Experience in pneumatic systems.
  • Experience in pipefitting.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to perform calculations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to read a tape measure, micrometer, dial indicators, pi tapes, and manometers.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to climb or balance.
  • Regularly climb portable and fixed ladders and stairs and perform tasks at elevations and on elevated platforms.
  • Climb in, on, and around equipment and machinery to make adjustments, repairs, and perform maintenance, requiring good balance and hand, eye, foot coordination.
  • May have to work in confined areas or awkward positions in order to complete tasks.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires cut resistant gloves and sleeves, heat resistant gloves and sleeves, safety glasses, goggles, face shield, ear plugs, and steel toed shoes.
  • Requires the use of hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, punches, screw drivers, pliers, and pipe wrenches on a continuous basis.

Responsibilities

  • Observe mechanical devices in operation and listen to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
  • Examine form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
  • Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Repair or replace defective parts.
  • Install special functional and structural parts in devices.
  • Lubricate and clean parts.
  • Start devices to test their performance.
  • Set up and operate metalworking tools to make and repair parts.
  • Move, position, and replace heavy weight equipment with mechanical aid.
  • Push toolbox to work areas.
  • Carry, lift, and transport parts to and from work location and maintenance shop.
  • Perform plant startup tasks, energizing all equipment and ensuring operation.
  • Install power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Connect power supply wires to machines and equipment, and connect cables and wires between machines and equipment.
  • Replace faulty electrical components on machines such as relays, switches, and motors, and position sensing devices.
  • Diagnose and repair or replace faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards.
  • Replace electric motor bearings and rewire motors.
  • Diagnose and replace faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machines and equipment.
  • Clean work area, tools, and equipment.
  • Utilize computer for work order entry and completion status.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning apparatus such as transformers, motors, and lighting fixtures and replace damaged or broken wire and cables.
  • Test malfunctioning machinery and discuss malfunction with maintenance manager.
  • Replace faulty electrical components on machine such as relays, switches, motors, positions sensing devices, AC/DC Drives and PLC components.
  • Replace electric motor bearings, brushes and rewire motors for installation.
