About The Position

Reporting to the Manager of Safety and Industrial Hygiene, this role involves interfacing with all levels of management, production workers, and regulatory personnel to assist in the implementation and assessment of compliance with Electric Boat's (EB) Industrial Hygiene & Safety programs at the North Kingstown, RI Facility. The selected candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of OSHA safety and health standards, with a particular emphasis on maritime standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
  • 3+ years of experience in Industrial Hygiene, toxicology, chemical management, or work anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards to prevent injury or illness.
  • Must be able to work at heights and confined spaces as required.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years or more of experience in Industrial Hygiene, toxicology, chemical management, or work anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards to prevent injury or illness.
  • Bachelors or master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
  • Experience in a shipyard trade or construction environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Electric Boat's Hazardous Communication program.
  • Evaluate and maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for vendor-supplied materials.
  • Develop and maintain in-plant and shipped material Hazcom labels.
  • Review purchases of new hazardous materials for use at EB.
  • Perform industrial hygiene sampling, including but not limited to noise, particulate, hazardous materials, paint, asbestos, and vibration.
  • Support sampling of painted surfaces and interface with Engineering and Planning on safe work procedures for these materials.
  • Perform ergonomic evaluations for both in-process work and office workers.
  • Review various objective quality evidence, such as industrial hygiene sample data, training records, and Material Safety Data Sheets for materials in use.
  • Actively participate in deck plate safety and industrial hygiene issues and programs.
  • Conduct periodic surveillances of ships and facilities for Safety/IH deficiencies, including tracking and trending.
  • Observe in-process work to ensure hazards are addressed and proper procedures, tools, and PPE are utilized.
  • Provide oversight of contractor work, both shipboard and non-shipboard, and report deficiencies to the contracting organization.
  • Participate in accident investigations, analyze safety and health data, and develop recommended actions.
  • Issue written reports to management summarizing findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
  • Develop and revise safety and health training lesson plans and provide safety and health training as necessary.
  • Maintain the EB Safety Manual and Industrial Hygiene Programs, and support the Contractor's Health and Safety Manual to ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and ISO 45001.
  • Develop and issue Hazard Communication and Safety Bulletins to provide timely and necessary information to the workforce.
  • Interface with Facilities and Operations personnel on projects to establish safety and industrial hygiene controls.
  • Interface with regulators on employee complaints, site inspections, and other regulatory activities.
  • Interface with 2-shift safety and health personnel.
  • Work overtime as necessary, provide off-shift and weekend coverage as necessary.
  • Travel as necessary.
  • Work extended hours and weekends as needed.
