About The Position

The Pennsylvania State University Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking an Industrial Hygienist with broad technical expertise and program management experience. This position is located at the University Park campus and provides industrial hygiene support to all University locations (including all Commonwealth campuses and research locations), except the Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine.

Requirements

  • Position requires a thorough understanding of industrial hygiene practices along with knowledge of occupational safety and environmental protection principles and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary.
  • The candidate must be able to achieve medical clearance and be able to wear respiratory protection.
  • This position is required to respond to emergencies involving health hazards as directed.
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) - Board for Global EHS Credentialing
  • Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
  • This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties.
  • A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates exposures to various workplace health hazards including airborne contaminants, noise, temperature extremes, and ergonomic stressors.
  • Identifies potential health concerns and completes industrial hygiene sampling to quantify exposures when appropriate.
  • Develops recommendations to control health hazards to ensure the well-being of employees and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manages assigned EHS programs.
  • Provides implementation guidance to University personnel affected by program requirements and develops necessary training materials and tools.
  • Evaluates exposures to determine program applicability, assists in developing appropriate control measures, and ensures medical surveillance is provided in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Strategically develops and maintains a comprehensive approach to the management of specific substances such as lead, silica, formaldehyde, cadmium, carcinogens, and other materials individually regulated by OSHA.
  • Evaluates associated exposures, creates training materials, and assists in the development of standard operating procedures for the safe handling of these materials.
  • Reviews construction and modification plans for ventilation systems, gas monitoring systems, and other installations designed to control potential health exposures.
  • Provides related consultation and recommendations to architects, engineers, and maintenance personnel to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Routinely assesses program metrics to identify new performance goals and training opportunities.
  • Manages data associated with assigned programs and ensures that records are maintained in accordance with regulatory and University requirements.
  • Serves as a team lead in responding to incidents that create potential health hazards and coordinates with EHS staff, campus units, police, fire, and contractors.
  • Supports emergency team preparedness and reviews responses.
  • Utilizes specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators and industrial hygiene monitoring equipment, enters hazardous environments, and conducts cleanup and decontamination activities to remediate hazardous material spills when necessary.
  • Participates on the EHS team and provides support to further the departmental mission.
  • Assists other EHS staff and provides services to other EHS programs as needed.
  • Works with fellow EHS staff to develop other programs as needed.
