About The Position

L&I’s DOSH is seeking an Industrial Hygiene Compliance Industrial Safety & Health Investigator (CISHI) 1, 2, or 3 to join our Region 10 – statewide agriculture team in any statewide L&I location. In this role, you will focus on workplace exposure hazards involving chemical, physical, and biological agents in mainly agricultural and related operations. Worksites may include cannabis grows, dairies, orchards, vineyards, livestock, food processing facilities, grain handling operations, greenhouses, agricultural labor housing, and other agricultural environments. This is not a medical, clinical, or patient care role. It is a technical position focused on occupational health hazards in agricultural environments, including exposure assessment, industrial hygiene sampling, hazard evaluation, and control of workplace risks associated with farming and agricultural operations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with Agricultural occupational health hazards such as pesticide exposure assessment, organic dust exposure, heat stress prevention, confined space evaluation, agricultural ventilation systems, or agricultural safety and health programs is highly valued
  • Interpretation of exposure limits (OSHA PELs, NIOSH RELS, ACGIH TLVs, etc.)

  • To qualify as a CISHI1-Industrial Hygiene (In-training): One year of professional industrial hygiene experience after graduation. A Master's degree in industrial hygiene will substitute for one year of professional experience in industrial hygiene or similar AND Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with one of the following: A bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, public health, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering (You must also attach your unofficial transcript to your application) OR Any other bachelor's degree program that contains at least 60 semester hours of creditable subjects, with at least 15 of those hours at the upper level (junior, senior, or graduate level). Creditable subjects are undergraduate or graduate level courses in science, mathematics, engineering, and science-based technology.   • To qualify as a CISHI2-Industrial Hygiene (In-training): Three years of professional industrial hygiene experience after graduation. A Master's degree in industrial hygiene will substitute for one year of professional experience. AND Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with one of the following: A bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, public health, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering (You must also attach your unofficial transcript to your application) OR Any other bachelor's degree program that contains at least 60 semester hours of creditable subjects, with at least 15 of those hours at the upper level (junior, senior, or graduate level). Responsibilities

  • Conduct industrial hygiene compliance inspections and exposure assessments using standard industrial hygiene sampling methods at a variety of agricultural worksites including farms, dairies, orchards, vineyards, greenhouses, grain handling operations, food processing facilities, and agricultural labor housing.
  • Evaluate occupational exposure hazards common to agricultural environments, including pesticides, fertilizers, organic dusts, diesel exhaust, heat stress, confined spaces, animal-related biological hazards, noise, and airborne contaminants.
  • Perform exposure monitoring including personal and area air sampling, pesticide exposure evaluations, noise monitoring, ventilation assessments, and heat stress evaluations using standard industrial hygiene equipment and methods.
  • Interpret sampling results using established exposure limits to determine risk and compliance.
  • Investigate workplace incidents involving potential overexposures to chemical and physical hazards, conduct root cause analysis and recommend effective control measures.
  • Prepare detailed, legally defensible industrial hygiene reports, including sampling methodology, data interpretation, and regulatory basis for findings.
  • Ensure compliance with WISHA occupational health standards and verify that identified hazards have been corrected.
  • Provide practical guidance to employers and employees industrial hygiene processes identifying exposure risks and how to reduce or eliminate them.
  • Work with technical experts and legal teams on complex cases and provide testimony when needed.
  • Support and mentor newer staff in industrial hygiene fieldwork, sampling approaches, and exposure assessment.
  • Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate.
  • Must be able to safely navigate a variety of agricultural work environments including farms, dairies, orchards, vineyards, food processing facilities, grain storage areas, uneven terrain, muddy or dusty conditions, ladders, catwalks, and outdoor agricultural worksites.
