This role involves preparing surfaces and applying coatings to fabricated industrial components. Key responsibilities include surface preparation using various methods, mixing and applying coatings via spray, brush, or roller, and ensuring adherence to specifications for thickness and quality. The painter must be knowledgeable about coating specifications, use measuring tools for mil thickness, and follow work orders, blueprints, and specification sheets. Tasks also include masking, touch-ups, and final inspection, along with maintaining spray equipment and hand tools. Safety is paramount, requiring strong knowledge of PPE, safe handling of hazardous materials, and adherence to shop safety rules, including confined-space awareness and fall protection. Familiarity with relevant standards like SSPC/AMPP and quality control is essential. The role may require basic familiarity with air monitoring, ventilation, and fire prevention. Preferred certifications include respirator fit-test, OSHA safety cards, and SSPC/AMPP courses. Physically, the job requires the ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs, with exposure to fumes, dust, and noise in various environments including enclosed booths, outdoors, or at heights. The ability to work shifts, overtime, and meet production schedules is necessary. Soft skills include attention to detail, strong visual quality standards, good communication, teamwork, time management, and the ability to meet deadlines. Optional skills that add value include experience with powder coating, catalytic coatings, specialty coatings, performing simple coating inspections, and basic welding/metal repair.
