About The Position

Mercury Marine is seeking an Industrial Engineer for the Materials department to optimize how materials move, are stored, and are used throughout the production of 75 HP+ outboard engines. You’ll focus on improving material flow, workspace layout, and handling methods to support safe, efficient, and high‑quality engine manufacturing. This role blends materials expertise with hands‑on manufacturing support, ensuring that components, coatings, and assemblies move through the plant smoothly and reliably. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering (or equivalent Engineering degree)
  • 3–5 years of experience in materials engineering, manufacturing, or material flow optimization
  • Extensive working knowledge and understanding of diverse manufacturing operations
  • Proficient in lean manufacturing tools and strategies, and process improvement methodologies
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or equivalent 2D drafting software is desired
  • Basic understanding of cost accounting concepts, techniques, and principles
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and documents
  • Experience with lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and material specifications
  • Proficiency with MS Office; CAD familiarity preferred

  • Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt
  • Experience with space planning, PFEP (Plan for Every Part), or material‑flow simulation
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment

Responsibilities

  • Improve material flow from receiving to assembly, ensuring efficient movement, staging, and replenishment
  • Design and optimize material handling systems, storage layouts, and workspace organization
  • Evaluate packaging, containers, and handling methods to protect materials and reduce waste
  • Analyze product flow and space utilization to eliminate bottlenecks and support takt‑time targets
  • Troubleshoot material‑related issues on the production floor (corrosion, wear, coating defects, handling damage)
  • Support new product introductions by defining material flow paths, storage needs, and handling requirements
  • Conduct audits to ensure proper material identification, storage conditions, and handling practices
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, design, and supplier teams to improve material quality and reduce scrap
  • Prepare cost analyses for material‑handling improvements and alternative material options
