INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN

Owen IndustriesCarter Lake, IA

About The Position

PVS Metals is looking for a skilled Industrial Electrician with low-voltage expertise, medium-voltage experience, and hands-on PLC knowledge to keep their electrical systems and automated production equipment running safely and at peak performance. This is a technically demanding role for an electrician who is equally comfortable diagnosing a complex automation fault as they are maintaining a medium-voltage distribution system. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of industrial electrical experience, can read and navigate PLC ladder logic, and takes pride in doing the work right the first time.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of industrial electrical experience in manufacturing, metals processing, or heavy industrial environments — steel fabrication experience is a strong plus
  • Comprehensive knowledge of low-voltage electrical systems including motor controls, MCCs, VFDs, and distribution equipment
  • Hands-on ability to read and interpret PLC ladder logic for troubleshooting — Allen-Bradley (Studio 5000/RSLogix) or Siemens TIA Portal experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of medium-voltage systems and the ability to work on them safely with appropriate PPE
  • Proficiency reading electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and equipment wiring diagrams
  • Strong troubleshooting skills — able to systematically isolate complex electrical and electromechanical faults under time pressure
  • Solid knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA electrical regulations, and LOTO requirements
  • Experience with VFD commissioning, troubleshooting, and parameter configuration
  • Completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent trade school and hands-on experience

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman Electrician license (Iowa or reciprocal state) — willingness to obtain encouraged
  • Experience making approved PLC program modifications
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PowerFlex or Siemens VFDs

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low-voltage (under 600V) electrical systems including motor controls, MCCs, VFDs, control panels, and distribution equipment
  • Perform PM and inspection of medium-voltage (601V–15kV) systems including switchgear, transformers, and distribution panels
  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults on production machinery, conveyors, cranes, hydraulic power units, and other plant equipment
  • Install and route conduit, cable tray, wire, and electrical components per NEC code and company standards
  • Test electrical systems using multimeters, megohmmeters, power quality analyzers, and oscilloscopes
  • Respond promptly to electrical emergencies and equipment breakdowns, prioritizing by production impact and safety risk
  • Read, interpret, and navigate PLC ladder logic (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent) to diagnose automation faults
  • Make approved PLC program modifications under engineering or management direction; document all changes
  • Troubleshoot and maintain HMI systems, sensors, encoders, servo drives, and other automation components
  • Support programming and commissioning of new automated equipment in coordination with OEM technicians and engineering staff
  • Maintain organized, up-to-date backups of PLC programs and electrical documentation
  • Perform all electrical work in strict compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70 (NEC), and NFPA 70E (arc flash safety)
  • Follow all lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures without exception
  • Coordinate planned medium-voltage outages with the Plant Manager to minimize production disruption
  • Participate in arc flash hazard analysis updates and facility-wide safety programs
  • Proactively identify and report electrical hazards, aging infrastructure, or code compliance concerns
  • Complete work orders, PM checklists, electrical inspection records, and maintenance logs accurately
  • Assist in maintaining one-line diagrams, panel schedules, and electrical drawings in current condition
  • Support facility electrical inspections and audits

Benefits

  • Health, Dental & Vision insurance
  • Life/AD&D and Disability coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Wellness program with premium incentives
  • Support for licensure and continuing education
  • Opportunities for growth and advancement within Owen Industries
