About The Position

The Industrial Electrician 1 is the second level of a three-level Industrial Electrician series in the City of Chattanooga’s Wastewater Plant Maintenance Department. This position performs electrical and instrumentation maintenance at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, including troubleshooting, repair, installation, calibration, cleaning, and preventive maintenance of a broad range of plant equipment and systems. The role may provide direction and training to Industrial Electrician Apprentice staff and may be assigned on-call duty with 24-hour availability. It is an essential position during inclement weather and may require reporting to or remaining at work during administrative closings. The position follows a Monday–Friday schedule of 7:00 A.M.–3:30 P.M. (EST), though hours may vary with assignments or projects. It is non-exempt and safety-sensitive. The role is a career-ladder position, with automatic progression to Industrial Electrician 2 after two years at the Electrician 1 level, subject to satisfactory achievement of the next position’s required knowledge and credentials.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and at least 1.5 years of experience in electrical maintenance, electrical control maintenance, electrical preventive maintenance, or electrical construction training; an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
Obtain a City of Chattanooga Board of Electrical Examiners Electrical License or Master Plant Electrician License within 24 months of hire. Until a Journeyman Electrical license is issued, work under the supervision of a Journeyman Electrician.
Valid Tennessee Class D driver’s license.
Knowledge of electricity fundamentals and their application to high-voltage substation equipment, electrical circuits, trade tools and equipment, and industrial safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of high-voltage systems, branch circuits and distribution systems up to 600 volts, utility distribution systems up to 12,000 volts, electrical programming, and low- and high-voltage test equipment.
Knowledge of plant UPS and DC systems; electro-pneumatic, electro-hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems; National Electrical Codes and City of Chattanooga Electrical Codes; NFPA 70E; OSHA regulations; lockout/tagout; personal protective equipment; motor theory, maintenance, and alignment; electrical theory; basic mechanical systems; underground utilities; and work-zone safety.
Skill using computers and related software applications; troubleshooting electrical problems in an industrial facility; installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical conduit, wiring, and controls; and using applicable trade tools and equipment.
Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive work direction.
Ability to meet the position’s physical demands, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Complete required pre-employment screening, including a background check, drug screening, lift test, and HepB titer.

Responsibilities

May lead Industrial Electrician Apprentice staff by assigning and monitoring work, training them in work methods and procedures, and providing direction.
Troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of electrical equipment using applicable trade tools, equipment, and diagnostic devices.
Design, build, install, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and clean electrical and instrumentation equipment, including PLCs, drives, motor starters and controls, switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, lighting, pumps, meters, sensors, SCADA systems, generators, and related equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance on electrical and instrumentation equipment.
Install sewage, chemical, water, and other pumps.
Clean and maintain vehicles, equipment, tools, and shop areas, including inspecting equipment, checking and replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, and washing and cleaning.
Prepare and maintain forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, requisitions, diagrams, measurement statements, and other applicable documentation.
Use, carry, and answer a cell phone as determined by job duties and the Department Head.
May provide on-call duty with 24-hour availability.
Meet regular attendance requirements and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, coworkers, managers, and citizens.
