About The Position

BRT Extrusions is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Controls Technician to support, troubleshoot, and maintain industrial control systems and automated equipment. The role works closely with Controls Engineering, Maintenance, and Production to reduce downtime, identify root causes of failures, commission controls devices, and improve equipment reliability. The technician is expected to develop the ability to independently troubleshoot routine controls problems, conduct effective root-cause investigations, make basic PLC and HMI modifications under engineering direction, support system commissioning, and serve as a first level of controls support for Production and Maintenance. The position also contributes to BRT’s controls standards and equipment-reliability goals. The role involves controls troubleshooting on extrusion, press, and heavy hydraulic systems, as well as work with Rockwell Automation platforms, PLCs, HMIs, drives, servo systems, field devices, safety systems, instrumentation, and industrial networks. The technician must document troubleshooting and maintenance activities, work independently within the scope of the role, and escalate advanced programming, system-design, and engineering-level changes to the Controls Engineer. The position is located at 1818 North Main Street in Niles, Ohio, and lists a midnight shift with compensation of $35–$40 per hour.

Requirements

  • A two-year degree in industrial, electrical, or controls-related studies plus 3 years of experience with industrial automation equipment; alternatively, 5 or more years of experience with industrial automation equipment without a degree will be considered.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and controls troubleshooting ability on extrusion, press, and heavy hydraulic systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation control platforms, including PLCs, PanelView HMIs, PowerFlex variable-frequency drives, Kinetix servo systems, and associated motion-control equipment.
  • Ability to connect to a PLC, navigate its program, view ladder logic, and understand how logic controls equipment operation.
  • Ability to trace ladder logic for troubleshooting without making unauthorized program changes.
  • Strong knowledge of 24 VDC and 120 VAC industrial control schemes, wiring practices, and electrical safety.
  • Experience troubleshooting digital I/O, analog I/O, relays, contactors, solenoids, sensors, motors, drives, and control-panel components.
  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting EtherNet/IP devices.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting IO-Link masters, IO-Link sensors, and smart field devices.
  • Understanding of 4–20 mA and 0–10 V analog signals, including scaling, calibration, wiring, and fault diagnosis.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and control-system documentation.
  • Familiarity with industrial safety systems, including safety relays, safety PLCs, emergency-stop circuits, light curtains, scanners, and guard interlocks.
  • Ability to use a multimeter and other electrical diagnostic tools to measure voltage, current, resistance, continuity, and control signals.
  • Ability to perform structured root-cause analysis and distinguish the root cause of a failure from its symptoms.
  • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and recognize when an issue must be escalated to Controls Engineering.
  • Ability to read and understand basic instructions in English and communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Willingness to participate in all required job- or employment-related training courses.
