About The Position

The Industrial Control Electrician is responsible for using good electrical principles to install, maintain or modify electrical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations of systems in a Class 1B nuclear facility. Maintaining and following quality programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure that Nordion meets ISO/GMP compliance. Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Operations, the Industrial Control Electrician will be responsible for using good electrical principles to install, maintain or modify electrical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations of systems. Perform maintenance and repairs on electrical equipment and systems using best trade practices. Maintaining and following quality programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure that Nordion meets ISO/GMP compliance. Monitors work activities to identify and implement any improvements that will provide improved service, functions, or repair. Must adhere to all safety programs in place at Nordion. This position is deemed a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). A Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) is defined by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as a person who is required, in the course of the person’s business, or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public (1 mSv per year for the whole body).

Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent and at least 5 years experience as a journeyman.
  • Must have a diploma from a community college in electrical.
  • Must possess Interprovincial Seal Ontario License for Electrician - Construction and Maintenance.
  • Reads blueprints and schematics;
  • Produce freehand layout sketches, schematics and wiring diagrams for new designs, as built condition, etc;
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise documentation including S.O.P.'s necessary to support the MDS Nordion quality system;
  • Possess sufficient colour vision to distinguish colour‑coded wires and cables;
  • Possess knowledge of appropriate code requirements (e.g. Ontario Hydro);
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of high voltage switchgear 13.8 and 44 KV, following appropriate safety procedures;
  • Knowledgeable in the use of appropriate test equipment;
  • Competent in operation of computerized building management system.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with PLC within a production environment is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Working with blueprints, schematics, and layouts.
  • Assembles, installs, and maintains electrical and electronic equipment such as high and low voltage devices (e.g. motors, lighting, power generators, switching, control gear, alarm systems for safety and radiation detection, etc.) and distribution systems.
  • Using analytical test equipment (e.g. multimeters, amprobes chart recorders, meggar, etc.), conduct tests and analyze results to determine causes of malfunctions and develop remedial action.
  • Carry out necessary repairs or advise supervisor with appropriate recommendations.
  • In conjunction with immediate supervisor, develops test procedures and maintenance programs for critical safety systems and control equipment to comply with applicable nuclear regulations, Labour Canada regulations, GMP and ISO‑14001 requirements.
  • Follows all pertinent codes and regulatory requirements when making electrical installations and alterations.
  • Installs and maintains components of computer-controlled Building Management System to ensure efficient and effective operation of environmental and energy management systems.
  • Develops primary engineering and layout designs for electrical systems. Also, in cooperation with in-house technical staff and outside engineering consultants, inputs to design and specification of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Collects data necessary to effectively carry out and expand a computerized Preventive Maintenance Program for critical equipment.
  • Carries out test methods and maintenance procedures for electrical systems to ensure proper functioning of equipment.
  • Notifies Supervisor when spare parts inventory needs replacement.
  • Provides accurately marked up prints to indicate electrical system changes so that as‑built drawing records can be revised and kept current.
  • Provides trade support to Emergency Response Team and as such may be called upon to take part in initial investigation and carry out appropriate and quick actions in response to any type of emergency situation on site.
