About The Position

Intern will assist the Houston Parks and Recreation Department with stewardship and restoration of the City's nature preserves and natural areas. Interns will assist in invasive species removal through chemical and mechanical methods, work in a greenhouse setting to propagate plants for restoration projects. Work with volunteers in plant propagation and planting in project areas. Assist in data collection, research, analysis, evaluation, inspections, or surveys. Work in a field team setting to complete assigned tasks. Interns will gain knowledge of natural resource management, habitat restoration, and botany. Gain knowledge of plant propagation techniques. Hands-on experience of chemical and mechanical methods. Safety practices and techniques for field work. Skills in operating and maintaining common tools and equipment used in habitat restoration work.

Requirements

  • No prior experience is needed, however the best candidates should be working toward (or obtained) a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting habitat restoration within City of Houston Parks
  • Working in the HPARD greenhouse to propagate plants for habitat restoration projects
  • Conduct invasive species removal using chemical and mechanical methods
  • Participate in community outreach events
  • Maintains, maintenances, and operates field equipment

Benefits

  • Living Allowance: $600/week
  • Commuting Allowance: $80/week
