About The Position

The Department of Revenue (ADOR) is seeking individuals committed to service, community, and teamwork for the Individual Income Tax Auditor 2 position. This role involves conducting routine to moderately-complex audits and research, analysis, and review of individual income tax refund claims to ensure taxpayer compliance with Arizona tax laws. Responsibilities include creating monthly production charts, conducting research, and working on special projects. The position offers potential for remote work within Arizona after an initial 6-month in-office training period.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of individual income tax policy and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable federal and state tax laws, statutes, and codes.
  • Basic knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Basic knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS).
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Strong mathematical computation skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, and averages).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demeanor.
  • Effective organization and time management skills with the ability to make measurable progress on multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in the use of a PC/laptop in a Windows environment.
  • Proficient in the use of the Internet.
  • Proficient in the use of Google Suite applications (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Drive).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficient in accounting systems.
  • Ability to clear a comprehensive background and clearance process including Arizona tax compliance verification and FBI criminal background check via level one fingerprint clearance.
  • Ability to work in a confidential manner, ensuring information is shared appropriately.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal and state tax laws to audit reviews and tax refund claims.
  • Ability to convey tax-related terminology and information in layman's terms.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and also participate collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to understand and solve problems by applying basic analytical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in Accounting, or closely related field.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement/or LEAN.
  • Minimum of six (6) months audit-related experience.
  • Twelve (12) hours of accounting and business coursework may be substituted for experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts routine to moderately-complex audits and refund reviews involving accurate calculation and application of tax laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs timely examinations of audits based on taxpayer correspondence and changes in calculations.
  • Reviews returns, makes determinations and corrections.
  • Elicits clarifying information, accepts evidence, evaluates testimony, and prepares case files.
  • Fully documents audits to support the Department's position and maintains orderly audit files.
  • Prepares audit reports and other reports.
  • Makes adjustments to taxpayer accounts in the tax system and performs data cleanup, including accounts flagged for potential fraud.
  • Responds to and resolves inquiries received in tickets and email.
  • Attends and represents the Department at informal and formal court hearings requiring in-state travel.
  • Reviews, researches, and responds to taxpayer inquiries and emails.
  • Conducts technical reviews of audit files, including research and examination.
  • Conducts research for senior team members and management.
  • Creates and maintains monthly production charts.
  • Remains current on all laws, regulations, policies, and best practices related to taxation.
  • Actively contributes to team and individual effectiveness by attending staff meetings, completing required training, and participating in assigned work teams.
  • Completes periodic metrics, projects, huddle boards, and reports as requested.
  • Prepares for and actively participates in 1:1 coaching with supervisor.
  • Maximizes work processes and deliverables through lean principles within the Arizona Management System (AMS).
  • Provides recommendations for process improvement and engages in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Educates taxpayers in tax law, rules, and regulations and ensures taxpayer compliance through the audit process.
