Indirect Tax Manager - Sales/Use Tax

About The Position

This role is for a leader with experience in sales/use tax accounting who enjoys staying up to date with the latest tax laws and regulations. The Indirect Tax Manager will handle complex tax matters, including overseeing tax audits and ensuring compliance with state and federal tax regulations. This position involves collaborating closely with internal teams and external tax authorities, providing strategic tax planning, and supporting the organization in sales/use tax-related matters. The manager will oversee the preparation, review, and filing of state and local tax sales/use tax returns, identify and resolve tax discrepancies, and manage tax audits as the main point of contact with taxing authorities. Ensuring compliance with all tax laws and regulations, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changes in tax legislation, and providing outstanding customer service to Profit Centers by addressing tax questions from the field in a timely manner are key responsibilities. The role also includes reviewing monthly general ledger account reconciliations and related journal entries for tax accruals and payments, developing and maintaining tax-related training materials, and researching and responding to tax-related inquiries. Collaboration with external third-party firms, assisting management with tax planning, strategy, and risk mitigation, and overseeing the sales tax refund review process are also part of the role. Additionally, the manager will assist in identifying process improvements, oversee use tax accruals and timely payment for sales tax discount recognition, and manage, recruit, hire, develop, and train a team of one or more sales/use tax professionals. Setting clear performance expectations and goals for the sales/use team and conducting regular performance evaluations are also required. The role also includes successfully completing required safety and compliance training programs and performing other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • 5 or more years of tax experience, a combination of public and industry experience is preferred.
  • 1 or more years of leadership experience.
  • Possess strong tax and accounting skills and the ability to leverage these skills to enhance efficiency and financial performance.
  • Have strong analytical and project management skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Possess strong listening skills, drive, and work ethic.
  • Be extremely well organized and detail-oriented to ensure deadlines are met.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Handle complex tax matters including overseeing tax audits and ensuring compliance with state and federal tax regulations.

  • Identify, investigate, and resolve tax discrepancies and issues in tax reports from taxing authorities.
  • Manage tax audits, serving as the main point of contact with taxing authorities and lead negotiating resolutions.
  • Ensure compliance with all tax laws and regulations, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changes in tax legislation.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to our Profit Centers by addressing tax questions from the field in a timely manner.
  • Review monthly general ledger account reconciliations and related journal entries for tax accruals and payments.
  • Develop and maintain tax-related training materials and documentation for internal teams.
  • Research and respond to tax-related inquiries from internal departments and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with external third-party firms on tax items and issues.
  • Assist management with tax planning, strategy, and risk mitigation to minimize tax liabilities.
  • Oversee the sales tax refund review process, identify potential refund within the company, and work with 3rd party providers to obtain refund.
  • Assist in identification of process improvements to enhance and optimize tax functions and operations.
  • Oversee use tax accruals and timely payment for sales tax discount recognition.
  • Manage recruit, hire, develop and train a team of one or more sales/use tax professionals.
  • Set clear performance expectations and goals for the sales/use team and conduct regular performance evaluations to assess progress and provide feedback.
  • Successfully complete required safety and compliance training programs as assigned.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.
