Ovintiv is seeking a strategic and relationship-driven Indigenous Relations Advisor to support the Indigenous relations efforts in our Canadian operations, with a focus on Northeast British Columbia and Northwest Alberta. This role will be instrumental in advancing Ovintiv’s engagement strategy, supporting regulatory advocacy, and fostering meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field. Related experience may be considered in lieu of education requirements.
  • Five or more years of relevant, cumulative experience in Indigenous Relations advisor, consultation, engagement, regulatory applications and relationship management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Treaty rights, traditional territories, and cultural protocols.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous rights, history, culture and the importance of Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian regulatory frameworks and consultation processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently within BC and Alberta.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with relationship agreements and community investment strategies.
  • Familiarity with Ovintiv’s Indigenous Relations principles: Community, Connect, Partner, and Action.
  • Knowledge of ESG and sustainability reporting frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain respectful and mutually beneficial relationships at all local levels with Indigenous communities in Northeast British Columbia and Northwest Alberta regions.
  • Lead proactive engagement at all levels with local community, municipal and provincial government stakeholders to support Ovintiv’s operational and strategic goals.
  • Support and actively participate in the implementation of Ovintiv’s Indigenous Relations Strategy that focus on the areas of Indigenous inclusion and opportunity on economic, business and employment opportunities for local Indigenous communities and businesses.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., Supply Management, Community Involvement, Operations) to ensure alignment with asset development plans, local procurement opportunities, relationship agreements and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent Ovintiv at Indigenous conferences, community events, and government forums to promote reconciliation and shared economic benefits.
  • Monitor and analyze policy developments, regulatory changes, and funding opportunities relevant to Indigenous and government relations.
  • Advise, liaise with, and make recommendations to the business and / or operating areas on strategic and complex Indigenous Relations initiatives.
  • Foster employee awareness for Ovintiv’s Indigenous Relations commitments and ensure corporate activities and practices are aligned.
  • Advise and support the development and implementation of Indigenous Engagement Plans or Relationship Agreements as needed.
  • Stay up to date on relevant regulatory changes and court proceedings as applicable to the position and activities listed above
  • Prepare briefing materials, reports, and presentations for senior leadership and external stakeholders.
