About The Position

The Indigenous Health Integration Lead, reporting to the Director, Indigenous Health, plays a pivotal role in aligning priorities between Fraser Health and the Simon Fraser University (SFU) School of Medicine. This position is designed to strengthen alignment, coordination, and relationship-building among Fraser Health, the Indigenous Health Medical Program Director, and SFU faculty and program leaders. The primary goal is to support culturally safe, respectful, and racism-free medical education and health services. The Lead is instrumental in health system transformation by embedding Indigenous cultural safety, humility, Indigenous-specific anti-racism, and trauma-informed approaches into practice, policy, and clinical learning environments. This includes preparing Fraser Health teams for medical student placements and ensuring teaching environments incorporate two-eyed seeing, Indigenous methods, and Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The successful candidate must possess a high degree of cultural credibility, lived experience, and grounding in Indigenous knowledge systems, serving as a cultural guide and knowledge translator. They will share teachings appropriately, foster cultural understanding, and uphold relational accountability with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, collaborating with community partners, clinical teams, and SFU School of Medicine leadership to integrate Indigenous perspectives and priorities across medical education and service delivery within Fraser Health.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Allied Health, or another relevant clinical discipline, with training and/or experience in health service delivery, research, and knowledge translation/exchange.
  • A minimum of five years’ recent clinical experience in health services, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience working respectfully with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, navigating cultural protocols, ceremony, and distinctions-based approaches, while maintaining humility, relational care, and a commitment to Indigenous-led, community-guided practice.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.
  • Demonstrated cultural credibility and grounding through lived experience, community engagement, cultural practice, or mentorship/teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, with the ability to share Indigenous teachings, frameworks, and ways of knowing in alignment with community protocols and relational accountability.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous methods and approaches to teaching and learnings, including two-eyed seeing, land-based learning, circle facilitation, and culturally grounded approaches that support medical education and the creation of culturally safe learning environments.
  • Ability to design and lead with cultural safety and humility and through a lens of trauma informed care/practice.
  • Working knowledge of change methodologies and tools coupled with a strong understanding of the health system.
  • Ability to influence leaders, physicians and staff at all levels to embrace and take action on change management initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels internally and externally, including within health care, government and Indigenous Communities.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in the Fraser Health region and an understanding of colonial impacts on health, wellness, public policy, and engagement.
  • Knowledge of traditional and current Indigenous practices and approaches related to governance and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated awareness of social determinants of health, Anti-Racism and equity, diversity, and inclusion principles/issues/trends.
  • Knowledge and experience in development of Knowledge Translation and evaluation theories, principles and practice.
  • Applies exceptional problem-solving abilities; independently resolve issues both efficiently and resourcefully.
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and applicable computer software applications.
  • Excellent working knowledge of current spreadsheet, graphics and word processing programs.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a cultural guide and knowledge translator, appropriately sharing Indigenous teachings and supporting learning environments grounded in Indigenous methods and approaches to teaching and learning, two-eyed seeing, land-based learning, and community protocols.
  • Strengthens readiness and capacity among Fraser Health staff, and medical staff to provide culturally safe, relational, and inclusive clinical learning environments for SFU medical students.
  • Supports the alignment of FHA and SFU faculty support for educators and preceptors.
  • Provides Fraser Health context and system insights to inform School of Medicine educational planning.
  • Enables and facilitate SFU medical learners and educators to participate in FH Indigenous engagements and teaching opportunities.
  • Builds and maintains respectful, distinctions-based relationships with First Nations Health Directors, Métis Chartered Communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous organizations.
  • Facilitates collaboration between Fraser Health, the Indigenous Health Medical Program Director, and SFU Medicine leadership to support coordinated Indigenous-informed teaching and service delivery.
  • Engages Fraser Health connected Indigenous communities to help build mutual relationships amongst the region including coordination with the School of Medicine when engagement intersects with shared relationships or placements, and liasing between SFU School of Medicine and FHA Indigenous clinics or other FH clinics for placement opportunities.
  • Contributes to organizational strategies, policies, frameworks, and programs that embed Indigenous cultural safety, humility, trauma-informed practice, and Indigenous-specific anti-racism.
  • Supports health system transformation initiatives and knowledge translation activities that advance Indigenous health and wellness across Fraser Health and the SFU School of Medicine partnership.
  • Conducts literature reviews, data synthesis, and evidence scans to support decision-making and continuous quality improvement.
  • Provides support in research and evaluation design using culturally aligned and community-informed methodologies.
  • Monitors progress, track performance measures, and contribute to reporting and evaluation activities.
  • Prepares briefing notes, reports, summaries, and presentation materials that reflect evidence, community perspectives, and organizational priorities.
  • Supports communication and dissemination of Indigenous Health and Wellness activities across Fraser Health.
  • Responds to internal and external inquiries related to Indigenous health, research, and community-guided approaches.
