About The Position

L’Arche Homefires is seeking an energetic, compassionate individual to nurture the growth of the Independent Living Support (ILS) Program and its assistants. This role will support members with intellectual and developmental disabilities and will be a member of the team leaders, directly supervising a team of ILS Assistants. The ILS Leader will support and foster the growing need to expand the ILS Program at L’Arche Homefires. Permanent roles offer a fair starting wage and are eligible for L’Arche Homefires extensive benefits package based on the L’Arche Canada National Compensation Policy. All members are required to become certified in eight (8) training core competencies and mandated Occupational Health (OH&S) which L’Arche Homefires will provide.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education or experience in human services, disability support, or similar
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience leading diverse teams.
  • Prioritizes relationships with ILS Core Members, families and the team.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively and collaborate within a team environment.
  • Already developed administrative skillset with the ability to apply basic HR concepts, scheduling, payroll and utilize Microsoft 365 and other software’s as it applies to the role.
  • Shows initiative and pays excellent attention to detail, time management, and deadlines.
  • Is highly organized, able to set priorities, and follow through on commitments in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to admit mistakes and learn; asks for and accepts help when needed.
  • Can remain calm and focused during times of uncertainty and crisis while providing clear directions.
  • Works collaboratively, models and promotes conflict resolution, and is appreciative of others’ efforts.
  • Comfortable working as part of a team, while being self-driven and motivated.
  • Ability to problem solve, assist in reaching solutions, and obtain necessary resources.
  • Valid NS Driver’s Abstract with access to a reliable and safe vehicle, including 2-million in insurance, is a Bonafide requirement for this role details provided.
  • Clear police checks, including Vulnerable Sector Screening required as a condition of hire.
  • Valid CPR and Standard First Aid (2-Day) certification required as a condition of hire.

  • Previous L’Arche experience is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures ILS Assistants create a welcoming, clean, safe, trusting, and unified home and supportive environment. Ensures diverse spiritual and emotional approaches are respected and time for meaningful reflection is shared.
  • Collaborating with team members to ensure that the physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, recreational, health, and safety needs of the ILS Core Members are met while maximizing their choices and participation in the decisions affecting their lives.
  • Ensures adherence to all policies, guidelines, and regulations as required by Department of Opportunities and Social Development are met and maintained as it relates to the ILS Program.
  • Encourages, and supports ILS Assistants to lead and contribute in regular celebrations to maintain traditions in the spirit of supporting the ILS Core Member to feel welcomed to engage with community life.
  • Provides stability in the ILS program during times of change and transition.
  • Ability to manage administrative and operational tasks efficiently, including email communication, payroll preparation, schedule management, digital record keeping, incident reporting, and maintaining team communication using software systems such as ADP Workforce Now, Sharevision, FMS and Microsoft 365.
  • Maintains regular and consistent roles and goals meetings, team meetings, and annual reviews with the assistants in the ILS program.
  • Ensure Assistants have the skills, training and direction required to perform their duties.
  • Assist in welcoming Casual Assistants to the ILS program, supporting them in their casual role.
  • Foster positive team relationships and is comfortable in addressing tensions.
  • Is proactive in understanding and supporting the ILS Program and its members by way of ensuring budgets, shopping, maintaining household needs, meal planning, employment opportunities, transportation, and medical needs are fully supported by the assistants working in the program.
  • Effectively communicates and builds positive relationships with families, guardians, and professionals as required to support the ILS Core Member.
  • Is an effective team member of the Team Leaders at L’Arche Homefires.
  • Ensure completion and maintenance of all eight (8) core competencies as required by the Department of Community Services and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), including ensuring the same of the ILS assistants.
