About The Position

The Inbound Transportation Optimization Specialist is responsible for the daily planning, execution, and monitoring of inbound transportation, ensuring the timely movement of goods from vendors into the Macy’s supply chain network using the Transportation Management System (TMS). This role works directly with vendors, carriers, and internal supply chain partners to support service performance, cost efficiency, and compliance for inbound deliveries. The Inbound Transportation Optimization Specialist reports to the Manager of Transportation and operates as an individual contributor focused on accurate routing, issue resolution, and consistent execution.

Requirements

  • Transportation Execution & Routing: Working knowledge of inbound transportation planning, routing, and shipment execution in a high‑volume environment.
  • Transportation Management Systems: Experience using transportation management tools (such as Blue Yonder) to plan, tender, and track shipments.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret data, identify trends or exceptions, and support decisions that improve service, cost, and reliability.
  • Problem‑Solving: Strong ability to identify issues, assess options, and execute practical solutions within established guidelines.
  • Communication: Clear and effective communication skills to coordinate with vendors, carriers, and internal partners and document issues or resolution steps.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work cross‑functionally with operations, distribution, and additional internal stakeholders to support inbound execution.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in routing decisions and execution activities, ensuring compliance with internal transportation policies and processes to support effective execution.
  • Basic Financial Awareness: Understanding of transportation cost drivers and how routing decisions impact freight expense.

  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in Supply Chain, Operations, or Transportation.
  • This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems.

Responsibilities

  • Execute Inbound Transportation Plans: Plan, route, and monitor inbound shipments from vendors to distribution facilities, ensuring loads are built, tendered, and executed according to established standards and timelines.
  • Support End‑to‑End Inbound Flow: Manage daily inbound shipment activity within the TMS, ensuring shipment accuracy, visibility, and alignment with transportation and supply chain requirements.
  • Monitor Performance & Identify Issues: Track inbound shipments, identify service disruptions or compliance gaps, and take appropriate corrective action by partnering with vendors, carriers, and internal teams.
  • Partner Cross‑Functionally: Collaborate with vendor operations, carrier partners, distribution centers, and internal transportation teams to resolve execution issues and support smooth inbound operations.
  • Leverage Data & Reporting: Use available data, reports, and dashboards to monitor vendor behavior, routing accuracy, service performance, and cost drivers, escalating trends or issues as needed.
  • Ensure Compliance: Support adherence to transportation policies, routing guides, and data requirements, addressing exceptions and documenting issues as they arise.
  • Maintain Strong Working Relationships: Build effective day‑to‑day relationships with vendors and carriers through clear communication, responsiveness, and consistent follow‑through.
