About The Position

Federated Insurance is seeking an In-House Attorney - Compliance to join their Compliance and Government Relations team. This role involves examining, researching, and interpreting laws, rules, and regulations related to insurance products, filings, and processing across all Federated lines of business. The attorney will provide legal advice on compliance, underwriting, and claims, and facilitate discovery in litigation. This position requires strong communication and relationship-building skills, acting as a consultant to offer strategies and recommendations in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. This is an in-office position located in Owatonna, MN, with alternative work schedules available, but no work-from-home option.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Actively licensed to practice law in the state of Minnesota.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • An unquestioned ability to retain confidential business and/or personnel information.

Nice To Haves

  • 3-7 years’ experience as a licensed attorney, preferably in an insurance or compliance related field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal research, advice, and counsel to all areas of the Company on compliance issues (i.e. policy language, privacy and records management, policyholder notifications, model audit rule, anti-money laundering, OFAC)
  • Serve as a resource to business areas in interactions and negotiations with state insurance regulatory contacts on compliance matters.
  • Oversee state law and insurance department regulations, advise and assist on state insurance department filings.
  • Advise on, assist with, and maintain records of response to insurance department and policyholder complaints.
  • Coordinate market conduct examinations for all product lines.
  • Coordinate responses to data calls and other information requests from regulators.
  • Conduct legal reviews and assist in the preparation of training materials, manuals, interpretations, bulletins, and policy forms, and endorsements.
  • Conduct research on compliance requirements, advise clients and assist in leading compliance efforts on corporate wide issues.
  • Engage as required on trade association and lobbying efforts for Federated.
  • Facilitation of discovery in litigation.
