The Impact Safety Test Engineer is responsible for planning, preparing, and performing impact safety-related testing, including full-size vehicle, component, and occupant sled testing. This role requires knowledge of domestic and global regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science in Engineering or from an ABET accredited University.
  • 1-5 years of automotive experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & MS Teams.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to manage continuous improvement initiatives and engineering projects with minimal supervision.
  • Effective operation of precise data acquisition equipment and software, or ability to master these systems in adequate time.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Hypergraph Analytical Software, Canalizer, Math-lab software, and Omega Temp loggers.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in an automotive test facility, impact testing preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience with logistics planning, warehouse management, or material handling.
  • Basic knowledge of LEAN principles and process improvement practices.
  • Basic knowledge of standard problem-solving techniques (8D, fishbone analysis, 5-Why, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of automotive restraint systems (airbag, seat belts, etc.) and interior trim assembly (instrument panels, seats, door trim).
  • Exposure to working with or supervising a unionized workforce.
  • Familiarity with global test regulations (NHTSA, FMVSS, EuroNCAP, etc.) and third-party test procedures (IIHS).
  • Masters in Electrical Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing impact test regulations and test requests.
  • Providing work instructions to technicians, mechanics, and photographers.
  • Performing tests according to regulations and conducting post-test data validations.
  • Ensuring test data collection systems are properly configured and capturing required data.
  • Interfacing with equipment suppliers and internal departments for calibrations/repairs and staying updated on software/hardware best practices.
  • Performing onsite physical preparation and testing, working with vehicles, test hardware, and software.
  • Developing and implementing new test methods and/or equipment.
  • Managing improvements to department processes.
  • Familiarity with global component and vehicle impact test regulations.
