About The Position

Gowling WLG's Immigration Group navigates the complexities of immigration laws and rules to help clients move personnel across borders and recruit skilled workers internationally. We are seeking to hire an immigration law clerk to join our expanding immigration practice in Calgary. Our immigration law clerk will assist our professionals counseling corporate clients seeking to hire foreign nationals in the United States (U.S.) and Canada. We provide advice on non-immigrant and immigrant status in the U.S., preparing petitions in a variety of categories for both temporary and permanent status. We also advise on Canadian immigration compliance and various Canadian immigration options.

Requirements

  • 2+ years as a Law Clerk specific to U.S. immigration
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. immigration practices and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, including the ability to take initiative with little instruction
  • Ability to handle a heavy and varied workload
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the practice and legal professionals
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent prioritization and organization skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrated commitment to a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and knowledge in Canadian immigration practices and procedures is an asset (but not required).

Responsibilities

  • Assisting professionals with legal matters relating primarily to U.S. immigration, with support for Canadian immigration matters as required.
  • Working collaboratively with immigration law clerks, legal administrative assistants and other members of the immigration team to support busy professional practices and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality client service.
  • Assisting with legal research, the preparation of immigration applications and petitions, and the organization, review and maintenance of correspondence, supporting documents and client records.
  • Liaising with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and other government agencies in connection with client matters, as appropriate.
  • Manage the lifecycle of immigration applications, including document collection, drafting, reviewing, editing, assembling and submitting application packages and tracking critical timelines and expiry dates.
  • Preparing draft forms, support letters, cover letters, client instructions, filing checklists and status updates, as well as assisting with the assembly, copying, scanning, uploading, couriering and electronic submission of application materials.
  • Ongoing communication with clients, immigration authorities and internal team members regarding application requirements, outstanding documentation, filing deadlines and the status of pending matters.
  • Keeping apprised of U.S. immigration updates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
