About The Position

This position will provide direct legal representation to low-income and culturally diverse immigrants pursuing various forms of immigration relief with Portland U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The immigration attorney performs client screening and intake, including determining eligibility for relief and providing immigration advice.

Requirements

  • 2 years of related experience; specific to Immigration Law
  • Juris Doctor degree, admission to any state bar in the US, and be in good standing
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
  • Intermediate mastery of business applications and productivity suites
  • Demonstrates resilience, awareness, and self-regulation in navigating challenges, conflicts, and obstacles/barriers.
  • Thrives in a diverse and multicultural environment; works with cross-functional teams to develop and implement strategies to enhance end-user experiences throughout the service lifecycle
  • Demonstrates exceptional commitment to serving and advocating for diverse and marginalized populations
  • Completes tasks in a moderately noisy environment
  • Interacts with others and performs tasks in-person and using technology, with moderate periods of stationary activity and minimal periods of increased physical activity, including and not limited to general office tasks
  • Moves equipment/materials weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Travels between worksites occasionally
  • Works in a variety of settings, including and not limited to LCSNW office locations, partner agencies, and community-based settings, courts, and faith-based settings such as churches
  • Meets LCSNW criminal background clearance requirements and other job-relevant clearances as required by the State or program

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct representation to clients before the Immigration Court and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
  • Develop and litigate cases, including legal research and developing case strategy
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant policies, laws, and trends in immigration law
  • Provide case support to other staff members on asylum and related matters
  • Perform related administrative tasks, such as case tracking and management
  • Participate in LCSNW’s outreach and development efforts
