About The Position

The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission seeks a qualified Staff Attorney II to conduct post-conviction felony criminal investigations. In addition to conducting innocence investigations, the individual in this position is responsible for case-related legal matters and may assist the Commission’s Executive and Associate Directors with Commission-related legal matters, including complex legal matters, as requested. The Staff Attorney II reports directly to the Assistant Director. This position requires considerable travel both in and out of North Carolina to conduct field interviews and investigations. Overnight travel is required. Routine work outside business hours is required. The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission is a neutral, fact-finding state agency charged with investigating post-conviction claims of innocence.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • An active license to practice law in North Carolina
  • A minimum of two (2) years of legal experience in litigation, civil law, criminal law, or post-conviction innocence work.
  • Applicants must have or be able to obtain a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Conduct post-conviction innocence investigations, including managing large/complex cases as a lead investigator and attorney.
  • Review and analyze voluminous case files, transcripts, and discovery.
  • Locate, inspect, and evaluate physical evidence.
  • Locate and interview witnesses. Position requires a particular focus on locating witnesses.
  • Prepare for depositions of case witnesses.
  • Be familiar with current DNA testing and other forensic testing methods, review and understand DNA/forensic reports, make forensic suggestion in cases and effectively communicate with lab personnel.
  • Prepare investigative reports that accurately document details of interviews, file reviews, witness searches, and evidence searches.
  • Prepare comprehensive case reports for presentation to the director and assistant director.
  • Prepare affidavits, motions, proposed orders, Memorandums of Understanding, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Communicate with law enforcement agencies, clerk’s offices, district attorney’s offices, and other professionals throughout case investigation.
  • Prepare for and may testify at Commission Hearings and other proceedings directly related to cases under investigation.
  • Assist with public presentations about the Commission as requested by the Commission's Executive Director or Assistant Director.
